Exciting news for the Leeland Cooperative in Maryland 🎉

After two years of organizing, partnership, and persistence, a law facilitating the creation of limited equity cooperatives in Maryland has been passed!

We want to give a big shout out to the members of the Leeland Cooperative in Takoma Park who have worked diligently alongside Share Baltimore, Grounded Solutions Network, Montgomery County, MD Department of Housing and Community Affairs, and the Community Development Network of Maryland.

Special thanks to Delegate Charkoudian’s team who were instrumental throughout in bringing HB 0085 to life.

Limited equity co-ops are about people, not profits. They create pathways to stable, affordable housing and give residents real decision-making power and a true sense of collective ownership.

🎉 We broke ground on 10Q Apartments!

After years of planning and partnership, we’re excited to celebrate the start of construction on this new mixed-income, energy-efficient community in Northwest DC.

When complete, 10Q Apartments will bring 29 affordable homes to the neighborhood along with green space, a rooftop patio, and a 2,000 square foot community space designed to support connection and well-being.

This project wouldn’t be possible without the support of our incredible partners, including DHCD, PNC Bank, the DC Green Bank, LISC, and the many community voices who helped shape the vision along the way.

We’re proud to take this step toward a more sustainable, inclusive future for DC.

Today, Mi Casa joined a coalition of local nonprofits and essential service providers to call on the DC Council to protect programs like ERAP and local rent supplements from being cut in the fiscal year 2026 budget. Cuts to housing and essential services undermine efforts to build a more just and livable DC for all of residents. Now is the moment for our city to create a budget that will champion a recovery that includes everyone.

We're thrilled to announce our closing on a $25 million funding package to complete energy-efficient renovations for two very affordable Ward 4 rental buildings at 4040 8th St NW and 301 Delafield St NW!

With this funding, we will create 43 fully electrified homes with state-of-the-art high-efficiency HVAC systems, Energy Star appliances, upgraded insulation, enhanced stormwater management and resident outdoor space.

Acquired under the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Program (T**A), the buildings will remain affordable to the long-term low-income residents and will also create some new two and three bedroom units to accommodate larger families.

🎉🎉🎉October is National Co-op Month and this year’s theme is "The Future is Cooperative.” We at Mi Casa imagine a future where cooperation drives our neighborhoods—where people, not just profits, are at the center of housing. So this month we want to give a big shout out to all the housing co-operators who are working together to bring this vision to life.

Stay tuned for highlights throughout the month on some of the incredible impact co-ops have had on our communities and some resources to get connected to DC's vibrant co-op community.

Thank you partners and friends for joining us this month for Mi Casa's Community BBQ!

We're still energized from being surrounded by the community leaders, dedicated staff, partners and funders that make our affordable housing work possible. We can't thank you enough for celebrating the retirement of our former Executive Director and Co-founder of Mi Casa, Fernando Lemos and the 30+ years that Mi Casa has been dedicated to providing and advocating for affordable, inclusive housing in the DMV area.

In case you missed it or want to relive memories from the event we put together a photo gallery for you to view at micasa-inc.org/community-bbq

It's National Homeownership Month! We recognize homeownership as a key piece of racial equity in housing. To celebrate homeownership month we are highlighting the benefits of Limited Equity Cooperatives (LECs) that make homeownership possible for Black and Brown residents across the District. LECs:

🏠 Help close the racial homeownership gap

As Black and Brown residents still confront the historic harms of racist policies like restrictive deed covenants and redlining on their ability to achieve homeownership, LECs provide deeply affordable homeownership opportunities, creating a foundation for financial stability and increased ability to save over time.

🏠 Prevent displacement caused by gentrification

As Black and Brown neighborhoods that were previously deemed hazardous by banks and the government rise in value due to gentrification, LECs provide opportunities for low-income people of color to remain in their neighborhoods instead of being priced out and to have a voice in their communities and to build on their legacies.

🏠 Instill political agency and strengthen community

District residents who chose to form an LEC strengthen their advocacy skills as they navigate the process of exercising their Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act rights to form the LEC. The democratic structure of LECs also brings communities together as residents from diverse backgrounds work together to push forward their shared vision of high-quality, affordable homeownership.

Don't miss tomorrow's virtual citywide T**A Townhall hosted by Jobs With Justice.

As you may have heard, T**A rights are under attack. The Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (T**A) is a fundamental tenant right that gives tenants the power to decide the future of their housing if the owner of their building decides to sell the property.

If you are a resident in DC, T**A join us tomorrow online at 11:00 AM to learn more about your rights as a tenant and how to defend them!
