US-Japan Bridging Foundation

The US-Japan Bridging Foundation awards scholarships to US undergraduate students to study for one semester or academic year in Japan.

www.bridgingfoundation.org/ The Foundation aims to expand the opportunities for study abroad in Japan to help prepare America’s young people to assume future global leadership roles. Students must be accepted in a program in Japan, and provide the tuition. Bridging Scholars are chosen by a volunteer committee and awarded scholarships of up to $5,000 for the academic year, which provide for travel and daily cost-of-living expenses.

🎓 Scholar Spotlight: Congratulations to Bridging Scholar Dotun Adedokun!

Dotun recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rutgers University with a B.A. in Japanese and Communications — an incredible accomplishment that reflects years of dedication, perseverance, and passion for cross-cultural learning.

We’re also excited to celebrate his next chapter: Dotun has accepted a placement with the JET Program in 伊江村 (Ie Village), Okinawa! This small remote island community, just a ferry ride from Okinawa’s main island, will soon become home as he continues to deepen his language skills and immerse himself in rural Japanese life and culture.

Dotun shared that studying abroad and connecting through the Bridging Foundation helped shape the path that brought him here today. We are so proud to see our scholars continue building meaningful connections between the U.S. and Japan, and we can’t wait to see all that lies ahead for him. おめでとうございます! 🇯🇵✨

From classroom discussions to real-world connections, Ella Jewell is making the most of her time at Keio University 🇯🇵

A third-year International Relations student from the University of Pennsylvania, Ella is diving into studies on Japan’s economy and politics while advancing her Japanese through daily life and conversation. Her spring so far has included exploring Tokyo and Yokohama, connecting with an international community in her dorm, and even sharing her own skills—teaching a yoga class in Yoyogi Park.

Outside the classroom, Ella is embracing cultural exchange in all its forms, from hosting English lessons to enjoying a 飲み会 with her students (and discovering new favorite foods along the way 🍢). Her experience reflects the curiosity, initiative, and global perspective that define Bridging Scholars.

Celebrating the transformative experiences of our Bridging Scholars 🌏🇯🇵

During his time at Akita International University, Boris Bespartochnyy (Fall 2025, Drexel University) immersed himself in a uniquely global academic environment while deepening his connection to Japanese culture. Surrounded by peers from around the world, he strengthened his language skills, expanded his worldview, and explored what a future connected to Japan could look like.

One of the highlights of Boris’s experience was studying iaido, a traditional Japanese martial art rooted in precision, discipline, and respect. Practicing in the Tohoku region, he engaged directly with local traditions and, after months of dedication, earned his 3-kyuu certification in a formal budokan setting. His journey reflects the meaningful cultural exchange and personal growth at the heart of the Bridging experience.

“I can’t remember the last time I felt this happy and fulfilled.” ✨

For Kalie Chang (Colorado College → Waseda University), studying abroad meant more than academics — it meant growth, connection, and taking risks. From language and translation courses to tea ceremonies with her host mother and daily conversations with her manga circle, Kalie built community while pushing past the fear of being a newcomer.

Even when challenges arose, she chose to keep reaching out, discovering friendships, confidence, and a deeper understanding of herself along the way.

From late-night train rides and spontaneous dorm hangouts to discovering hidden corners of Japan, Talia McCray’s semester at Waseda University was filled with moments that reshaped how she sees the world — and home.

Returning to New York brought new perspective: appreciating connection, intentional living, and the small details that make everyday life meaningful.

As Talia finishes her final college semester, one thing is certain — Japanese language and culture will remain part of her future.

“Why Japan, exactly?” 🇯🇵

For Silas Nahan (UMass Amherst → Nanzan University), the answer didn’t fully form until he was living it.

With support from the Bridging Scholarship, Silas studied Japanese at Nanzan University — his first time leaving the U.S. — and discovered that language learning is about far more than vocabulary or fluency. It’s about finding how to express your whole self in another language.

As Silas reflects: studying Japanese isn’t about becoming someone else — it’s about discovering new ways to be fully yourself, and the opportunities that exist inside every conversation.
