KREWE OF PYROS JUNE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Terrence Hayes | KOP Class of 2023

Today, we’re shining the FIYAH spotlight on Terrence Hayes, a proud native of Port Sulphur, Louisiana, now residing in Gretna, LA. A graduate of Port Sulphur High School and the University of Arizona Global Campus, Terrence brings leadership, service, culture, and purpose into everything he does.

Introduced to the Krewe of Pyros by KOP Parliamentarian Stephen Stanley, Terrence quickly found that KOP was a place he could serve, lead, grow, and build meaningful relationships while staying rooted in the culture and traditions that bring us together.

For Terrence, embodying the values of KOP means showing up with purpose, serving others, leading with integrity, and investing in people. He continues to make an impact through his involvement on the Inaugural Parade Committee, Community Service Committee, Fundraising & Development Committee and as a proud FIYAH Stepper!

Outside of KOP, Terrence is celebrating some major milestones, including welcoming his newest little princess granddaughter, completing a full rebuild of his 1966 Chevy C10, and being voted AFGE 3457 Local Union Vice President. He also enjoys riding motorcycles, fishing, and spending time with his grandkids.

Terrence is FIYAH. Leadership. Legacy. Service. Culture!

As we observe Memorial Day, the Krewe of Pyros reflects, with solemn remembrance, on the men and women who have given their lives to the cause of freedom and liberty. Their service came at a cost and we will not forget the sacrifices they made out of a deep love and loyalty to our country.

May KOP Member Spotlight: Karen Brown

The Krewe of Pyros proudly shines this month’s Member Spotlight on Karen Denise Johnson Brown, Class of 2024 also known as "224444!". Karen is a dedicated leader, culture keeper, and true embodiment of KOP’s mission: Illuminating the Path to Empowerment.

Born in New Orleans’ historic 7th Ward and raised in the 9th Ward, Karen carries the spirit, soul, and pride of Louisiana everywhere she goes. After admiring KOP since its founding, her journey to membership came full circle after attending her first KOP Ball in 2024. She has been on FIYAH ever since!

Karen recently retired after 42 years of Federal Government service. She returned to school nearly 40 years after earning her undergraduate degree, and is currently maintaining a 4.0 GPA while pursuing a master’s degree in health information technology. She has also contributed over 250 volunteer hours supporting KOP committees, community service initiatives, social justice programs, parade planning, and storytelling efforts that uplift survivor voices and preserve community impact.

From supporting domestic violence awareness panels to dementia advocacy efforts, Karen leads with compassion, purpose, and action.

To Karen, KOP is more than an organization; it's a family, a culture and a bridge between Louisiana and the DMV.

Today, we celebrate Karen for her heart, her leadership, and her commitment to service.

Join the Krewe of Pyros for our May Mental Health Awareness Speaker Series featuring Sarah Payne Naylor, transformational life coach and published author.

Sarah’s work centers on healing, renewal, purpose, personal power, and the ongoing journey of becoming at every stage of life. At 83, she brings decades of lived experience and professional wisdom to a powerful conversation on aging, dignity, identity, and the right to continue growing, contributing, and thriving.

In honor of Older Americans Month, this meaningful conversation will challenge ageist assumptions, celebrate the wisdom and contributions of older adults, and remind us that aging does not erase a person’s value, voice, agency, or purpose.
