The American Turkish Association of Washington DC (ATA-DC) extends its deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Vacit Yakup Ozberkmen, a respected physician, devoted community member, and longtime supporter of Turkish American friendship.
Born in İzmir, Türkiye, on December 15, 1930, Dr. Ozberkmen passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, at the age of 95. A graduate of Istanbul University Medical School, he dedicated his life to medicine, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. His distinguished career spanned Türkiye and the United States, including his residency at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C., his work in establishing the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hacettepe University Medical Hospital, and his medical practice in Northern Virginia.
For more than 50 years, Dr. Ozberkmen made his home in McLean, Virginia. He was an active member of the American Turkish Association of Washington DC and was deeply respected for his advocacy of U.S.-Turkish friendship and community building.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Ozberkmen will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, generosity, and dedication to his family, patients, colleagues, and community. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, healed, mentored, and inspired.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his children Deniz, Yasar, and John; his grandchildren; his extended family; and all who knew and loved him.
