SUMMARY
Sebastian has a problem. He's in love with Mary but his father won't agree to their marriage. In desperation he turns to the one person who can help him: the fearless and feisty cross-dressing thief Moll Cutpurse.
This shockingly contemporary but rarely produced 1611 play takes a raucous, mischievous look at gender, counterculture, generational tensions, and the lengths we go to for the ones we love.
CONTENT WARNINGS:
Brief physical intimacy, some sword violence.
CHARACTERS
Moll Cutpurse - 20s, she/her. A gender outlaw and underworld celebrity of early modern London. Moll smokes, fights, steals, and *gasp* wears trousers! A source of consternation to the older generation and admiration to the younger one, and is even willing to lend a hand to a pair of star-crossed lovers. Be q***r do crimes. Will be engaging in a swordfight. Comfortable with brief singing.
Sebastian Wengrave - 20s, he/him. A young gallant desperately in love with Mary Fitzallard. Loverboy, mischievous. Engages in brief physical intimacy.
Mary Fitzallard - 20s, she/her. The daughter of a poor knight and object of Sebastian’s affections. Scrappy, mischievous, underestimated. Engages in brief physical intimacy. DOUBLED WITH Laxton - 20s, he/him. Moll’s admirer; certified f**k boy. Will be engaging in a swordfight.
Sir Alexander Wengrave - 40s/50s, he/him. Sebastian’s boorish father. A set-in-his-ways old aristocrat who wants his child to marry into wealth, or at the very least nobility, and is willing to hire a detective to ensure that.
Trapdoor - any age (he/him); a local detective hired to uncover Sebastian’s “romance” with Moll; thinks he’s in Knives Out. DOUBLED WITH Neatfoot - any age (he/him) a long-winded, bumbling butler.
Mistress Openwork - any age (she/her) disgruntled shop owner, NOT a fan of Moll; DOUBLED WITH Sir Guy - any age (he/him), Mary’s father, wants his daughter to marry up. Other tracks as needed.
Sir Davy Dapper - any age, (he/him, maybe) gossipy aristocrat; DOUBLED WITH Goshawk - any age (he/him) Laxton’s friend, f**k boy in training. Other tracks as needed.
