Fifteen years ago today, on September 20, 2011, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” officially came to an end.

Today is a day to recognize progress but it is also a day to remember.

We remember the LGBTQ+ service members who raised their right hands and served our nation while being told that a part of who they were had to remain hidden.

We remember those who served in silence, afraid that honesty about who they were or whom they loved could cost them their careers.

We remember those who were investigated, separated from the military, denied opportunities, or forced to choose between living authentically and continuing the service they loved.

We honor the veterans who carried those experiences with them long after taking off the uniform.

And we honor the LGBTQ+ service members who continue to serve our country today with professionalism, courage, dedication, and pride.

The repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was an important milestone, but anniversaries like this should remind us that progress is not simply something we celebrate. It is something we protect, strengthen, and continue.

There is still work to be done.

We must continue standing for dignity and respect for every person who volunteers to serve. We must continue listening to the experiences of LGBTQ+ veterans and military families. We must continue ensuring that those who came before us are remembered, that those serving today are supported, and that those who serve tomorrow inherit a military where their service and character not whom they love or who they are define their place in our ranks.

For those who served in silence: we remember you.

For those who were forced out: we honor you.

For those serving today: we stand with you.

And for those who will wear the uniform tomorrow: we will continue doing the work necessary to ensure that every person willing and qualified to serve can do so with dignity.

Fifteen years later, we remember how far we have come and we recognize that the work of building a more inclusive military community continues.

Honor the past. Support those serving today. Keep moving forward. 🇺🇸🏳️‍🌈
