“One step forward, two steps back.”

That’s how RESULTS advocate Kelley Osborne describes finally receiving housing assistance after years on a waiting list, only to have her SNAP benefits cut by 42%.

Kelley recently brought that lived experience to DC Journal’s Point/Counterpoint debate over SNAP, housing, and the safety net, offering a powerful response to the argument that recent changes are simply bringing pandemic-era programs back to an appropriate size.

Kelley’s message puts people at the center of the policy debate: “Food. Housing. Healthcare. These are not luxuries. They are basic human needs.”

At RESULTS, we believe poverty is a policy choice and that people experiencing poverty must be at the center of creating the solutions. Advocates like Kelley show what that looks like: using their voices to challenge narratives, shape public conversations, and make sure policymakers understand what their decisions mean in people’s lives.

As Kelley writes:

“We cannot stay silent. We need to speak up for the kind of country we want to live in — a country where working families, seniors, people with disabilities, and anyone facing hard times can count on a basic measure of security.”

WE MET THE MATCH!

Our generous RESULTS community stepped up again! Thanks to a flurry of gifts in the last few days of the match, we met and exceeded the $50,000 goal, raising $56,855! With the match, that translates into $106,855 that will supercharge our high-impact advocacy.

The fight to protect and restore U.S. safety net and global health and humanitarian programs is not over. With your support, we will keep the pressure on Congress, and we will have an impact.

Thank you, again, for your partnership as we pursue a world where everybody's basic needs are met and all children and communities can thrive.

We have an incredible opportunity to raise $50,000 with your support. An anonymous donor will match all gifts to RESULTS made by end of today, August 17, up to $50,000. We are at 99% of our goal, with about $700 more to go!

We're fighting for food and for housing assistance for Americans working multiple jobs and still struggling to make ends meet. For humanitarian assistance in places where children are needlessly dying from malnutrition. And for tackling diseases of poverty, like tuberculosis, the deadliest infectious disease on the planet.

With our high-impact advocacy, we’ll do everything possible to realize our vision of a nation and a world where everybody's basic needs are met and all children and communities can thrive.

As Pride month comes to a close, hear from Sarah Leone of RESULTS on her reflections on the Stonewall riots and the trans activists who fought for the LGBTQIA+ community. RESULTS supports the rights and dignity of all trans people.

This is a photo of Gay Liberation, a sculpture by George Segal that honors the gay rights movement and commemorates the events of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, located in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

We are deeply saddened to learn that Randy Rosso, co-Group Leader for RESULTS Virginia, has died of brain cancer. Randy was open about his experience and stalwart in continuing his passionate advocacy even as he walked through diagnosis and treatment.

Throughout his life, Randy applied his enormous expertise, vision, tenacity, and commitment to fighting for a more just and humane world, and even more so in these last months. He delivered a brave, informative, and very personal TEDx talk at TEDx Boston College in late March on the intersection of public policy and food insecurity (the full text of which you can read on his Substack "Make the Math Work").

Randy used the precious time he had to inspire those around him and to call us to remain bold and steadfast in the fight for equity and for a nation and world without hunger and poverty. Our thoughts are with Randy’s family and all the many people who loved him.
