We're closed Monday, October 12, in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day.
This date is a time to reflect on humankind's history and to recognize the original peoples of the Americas, whose knowledge and traditions remain alive today.
Many of the families who learn with us carry those roots as part of their heritage. Those roots live in the stories of our elders, in the traditions we share, and in everything parents and caregivers pass on to their children.
We'll see you Tuesday, October 13.

El lunes 12 de octubre estaremos cerrados por la conmemoración del Día de los Pueblos Indígenas.
Esta fecha invita a reflexionar sobre la historia de la humanidad y a reconocer a los pueblos originarios, cuyos saberes y tradiciones siguen vivos hoy.
Muchas de las familias que aprenden con nosotros llevan esas raíces como parte de su herencia. Esas raíces viven en las historias de nuestros mayores, en las tradiciones que compartimos y en lo que cada madre, padre o persona cuidadora enseña a sus hijos.

We had the opportunity to connect with Rachel Simon, DMV Relationship Manager, and Teresa Parra, Ticketing Associate for DMV/Florida.

Haley Wiggins has led The Family Place for the past 18 years, and we couldn’t be prouder of what our communities have accomplished, supported by our collective work under her leadership. On September 10, Collaborative Solutions for Communities recognized Haley's work with the Community Impact Award at their 30th Anniversary Gala. We’re here to keep the celebration going and thank Haley for leading our team to be one of the best resources for families in DC.

We’re also proud to celebrate alongside Natalia Isaza Brando, TFP board member, and Ticia Cole, CSC Program Director.

A shoutout to Collaborative Solutions for Communities on their 30th anniversary! Let’s keep this partnership going to serve our communities for many more years!

Haley Wiggins ha liderado The Family Place durante los últimos 18 años, y nos llena de orgullo ver todo lo que nuestras comunidades han logrado gracias al trabajo que hemos realizado con liderazgo. El 10 de septiembre, Collaborative Solutions for Communities reconoció el trabajo de Haley con el Community Impact Award durante la gala por su 30º aniversario. This week, Mayor Muriel Bowser proclaimed September 13–19 as DC Adult Education & Family Literacy Week, recognizing the role of adult education and family literacy in creating opportunities, strengthening families, and promoting lifelong learning. The proclamation highlights foundational skills like English, numeracy, digital literacy, and pathways to education and careers that open doors for adults and families.

This aligns with TFP’s and TFPPCS's mission to empower low-income families and support the optimal development through educational services.

Let's celebrate adult learners advancing their skills and achieving their goals, and all the educators, volunteers, and partners supporting them!

Esta semana, la alcaldesa Muriel Bowser declaró del 13 al 19 de septiembre como la Semana de la Educación para Adultos y Alfabetización Familiar de DC, reconociendo el papel de la educación para adultos y la alfabetización familiar en la creación de oportunidades, el fortalecimiento de las familias y la promoción del aprendizaje a lo largo de la vida. La declaración destaca habilidades fundamentales como el inglés, las matemáticas y la alfabetización digital, así como las oportunidades de continuar con la educación y avanzar profesionalmente, lo que abre nuevas puertas para adult@s y familias.

Esto se alinea con la misión de TFP y TFPPCS de empoderar a las familias con bajos ingresos y apoyar el desarrollo integral de sus hij@s a través de servicios educativos.

Last week was the first week of evening classes and was full of fun, a few first-week nerves, and lots of play as families settled into the new routine. Adult students engaged in learning activities while children enjoyed the park, hands-on STEM exploration, and a fun cooking experiment (Blueberry Pancakes) that helped build problem-solving and life skills. It was an exciting start to the program year, filled with learning, laughter, and family connection.

La semana pasada fue la primera semana de clases en horario nocturno y estuvo llena de diversión, de nervios al comenzar una nueva etapa y de muchos momentos de juego, mientras las familias se adaptaban a la nueva rutina. L@s estudiantes adultos participaron en diferentes actividades de aprendizaje, mientras que l@s niñ@s disfrutaron del parque, realizaron actividades prácticas de exploración y participaron en un divertido experimento de cocina (panqueques de arándanos). Fue un gran comienzo de año, con muchos aprendizajes, momentos divertidos y tiempo para compartir en familia.

• Arrive on time for class.
• Participate, ask questions, and stay engaged.

On August 11, we hosted our monthly Community Food Distribution in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank. The distribution was open to the entire community, offering families and neighbors a variety of food items, including vegetable oil, cereal, pasta, fresh produce, and seasonings. This collective effort helps ensure that DC families have access to fresh food while they focus on school, work, and everyday life.

Thanks to our partner Capital Area Food Bank and community members for their support in making these distributions possible.

El 11 de agosto, llevamos a cabo nuestra distribución mensual de alimentos para la comunidad, en colaboración con Capital Area Food Bank. La distribución estuvo abierta a toda la comunidad y permitió que familias y vecinos recibieran una variedad de alimentos, como aceite vegetal, cereales, pasta, frutas y verduras frescas y condimentos. Este esfuerzo colectivo nos ayuda a garantizar que las familias de DC tengan acceso a alimentos frescos mientras se enfocan en la escuela, el trabajo y sus actividades diarias.
