We just wrapped up the final session of CAPAL's 2026 Washington Leadership Program, and what a way to end the summer!

In partnership with AALEAD, we brought four incredible AANHPI entrepreneurs into a room with 20+ middle and high school students for an Entrepreneurship Workshop unlike anything we've done before.

Zach Heng (Yunnan By Potomac, The Heng Group, Ascend)
Julia Chon aka Kimchi Juice (DC muralist and artist)
Toby & Monina Bantug (Toby's Homemade Ice Cream)
.. each shared their stories, and then sat down with small groups of youth to help them build their own.

Every student left with their own Entrepreneurship Blueprint. Some ideas were serious, some were silly, and most importantly, all of them were real.

Four Filipino American leaders: an immigration attorney, a city government director, a DC public policy official, and a documentary journalist, coming together to talk about the journeys, the sacrifices, and the stories that have shaped Filipino American identity across generations.

Session 3 of CAPAL's Washington Leadership Program was unlike anything we've done before.

Instead of a traditional panel, we invited one speaker to take the room: Evan Fernando, a 19-year-old student, journalist, and advocate who immigrated from Sri Lanka to Florida at age 9. Evan shared his story: life in Sri Lanka, the realities of assimilation, the barriers he's faced, and the work he's built since, in front of a room of students and young professionals who saw themselves reflected in his words.

Attendees also completed reflection activities before the session, writing letters to their younger selves and mapping what they'd carry from their cultures to a new place. It was a night of honesty, community, and real conversation about what assimilation really costs.

An important update on our 2026 Washington Leadership Program.

Our July 1st session on Cross-Community Solidarity has been rescheduled to Tuesday, July 15th, same time, same place. Several of our speakers faced unexpected emergencies this week, and we made the decision to postpone rather than proceed without the voices this conversation was built around.

If anything, this moment is a reminder of why solidarity matters and why we need these conversations more than ever.

Last month at CAPAL's Washington Leadership Program, we tackled one of the most persistent and invisible challenges facing our community: the bamboo ceiling.

Our panelists — Ambassador Chantale Wong, Thu Nguyen, Denise Lew, and Karim Farishta — brought honesty, depth, and decades of hard-won experience to a conversation about what it actually takes to break through in federal and public service as an AANHPI professional.

It was a powerful evening of community, storytelling, and real talk, which is exactly what WLP is meant to be.

The Bamboo Ceiling, the invisible barrier that limits AANHPI advancement into leadership roles, is one of the most talked about and least addressed challenges facing our community in the workplace. Session 2 of WLP 2026 is bringing that conversation into the open.

Chartering Homeland to Newfoundland: AANHPI's Historic Timeline is a 6-week speaker series for AANHPI students, young professionals, and community members who want to connect, learn, and lead together. Every session is free, includes dinner, and features panelists who are doing the work in public service and beyond.
