DCNRHS is in search of several good photographs of the first excursion train our organization sponsored to Strasburg Junction, VA on October 21, 1951. This fall foliage excursion train lead by B&O steam locomotive #5007 took 492 passengers on a 210 mile journey from Washington over the B&O Railroad via Brunswick and Harper's Ferry then down the Shenandoah Valley line to Strasburg Junction, for a fare of three dollars and seventy-five cents. If you have any photos you can share, please get in touch with DCNRHS at [email protected]. Thank you!

DCNRHS is accepting applications from 9th through 12th graders for the G. Lawson Clark RailCamp Scholarship to RailCamp again in 2026. RailCamp is an educational experience designed to teach students about 21st century railroad operations, dispatching, and maintenance, while simultaneously providing insight into the early history of U.S. railroads in the development and settlement of our country. The scholarship is awarded annually by DCNRHS to a high school student, usually from the Washington, DC, area, who shows interest and aptitude in railroads and history. The scholarship covers tuition, meals, and lodging (but not travel costs). RailCamp is organized and sponsored by the National Railway Historical Society, which has provided more information on their website at http://www.nrhs.com/program/railcamp.

The scholarship winner may attend RailCamp East, which will be held in Newark, DE, dates June 21-26, 2026, or RailCamp West, which will be held in Tacoma, WA dates June 21-27, 2026. If you know of a high school student with an interest in railroading, please encourage them to apply. Applications must be received by February 15, 2026. All applications for the scholarship will be evaluated by the Washington D.C. Chapter, NRHS. Information about RailCamp and all application requirements for the scholarship are available on the DC Chapter’s website at http://www.dcnrhs.org/projects/railcamp.

Penn Central E-44 #4461 leads a freight train through Landover, MD in August 1973. These 4,440 h.p. locomotives with single arm pantographs were originally built for the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1960 to 1963 by General Electric; they passed through to Conrail, operating until the early 1980s on freight assignments in electrified territory. Conrail sold them to NJ Transit and GE in the mid-1980s and most were scrapped in the 1990s. Sister locomotive #4465 can be seen in the collection of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Richard D. JOHN H. EMERY RAIL HERITAGE TRUST GRANT
AWARDED TO DCNRHS FOR
DOVER HARBOR DINING IN PULLMAN COMFORT PROJECT

Washington, DC: DCNRHS is pleased to announce that it is the recipient of a 2025 grant from the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust. The $8,800.00 award will help fund work on the historic Pullman rail car, DOVER HARBOR, to rebuild and reupholster the banquette seats in the car’s lounge.
The Pullman Company was principally concerned with providing excellent accommodations for their passengers. Dover Harbor's banquette tables provide for the essential rail travel experience of dining while enroute. As part of a Dover Harbor trip, passengers are served chef-prepared meals, seated at the three, four-seat tables. The cushioned seats and backs for these tables were rehabilitated and reupholstered in the mid-1980’s during the original refurbishment of the car. They have seen many passenger-miles service in trips and charters since and now need rebuilding/reupholstery. Recent historical research, including the acquisition of an authentic original Pullman upholstery fabric sample, will guide this project to bring these seats to a closer interpretation and more comfortable condition. As part of the process, the seat frames will be assessed and repaired/refinished as necessary. The estimated cost for this project is $17,900.00; tax-deductible contributions in support of this project may be made to DCNRHS and will be gratefully accepted. This work will be conducted this year as operations permit, in addition to regular ongoing maintenance of the car.
The John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust was created by Mr. John Emery, a native of Chicago, to support Mr. Emery’s interest in passenger trains of the 1920’s to 1950’s. Grants are awarded each year for projects that emphasize and support the preservation and restoration of operating passenger rail equipment from the “Golden Age” of U.S. rail service. For more information on the Emery Rail Heritage Trust and Mr. Emery, please see their website at https://emeryrailheritagetrust.org/WP/

About Dover Harbor
Dover Harbor is a classic heavyweight Pullman built railroad passenger car that has a 24-seat lounge, a buffet (kitchen), and six double-bedrooms. Built in 1923, it was once part of a fleet of over 8,800 Pullman cars. The car was operated by the Pullman Company in first class service on name trains of the Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads across the Northeastern United States. Today, Dover Harbor is the last Pullman built heavyweight revenue car in its original configuration traveling the mainlines of America. The car, which has been operated by DCNRHS in public trips and in charter service since 1982, is certified for operation up to 110 mph anywhere in the Amtrak System. Dover Harbor is lovingly maintained by the volunteer members of DCNRHS who operate it to give the public an opportunity to experience First-Class mainline rail travel from the golden age of railroading. Trip revenue goes back into the car to keep it running. More information about Dover Harbor is available at www.doverharbor.com .

This is worth a look. One of our members Alan has a 1957 Pontiac Chieftan Safari that he restored. A 1957 Pontiac is somewhat rare, but what makes it really unique is that the car was built for the Northern Pacific Railroad to inspect the tracks - and it also has train wheels. He takes it out and rides the rails. He's had some amazing trips. This is a short (13 minutes) well narrated one that gives you the front-seat view of a Canadian rail line to Gaspe.

Baltimore and Ohio train #22--- the Daylight Speedliner--- passes University Station in the District of Columbia (now the location of the Brookland/CUA Metro Station), en route on a seven-hour schedule from Pittsburgh to Washington, then Baltimore beyond in the early 1960’s. This unique four-unit train is composed of RDC’s (rail diesel cars). The lead unit, B&O #1960 is especially unique in that it was one of two RDC-2’s purchased by the B&O with a configuration of a baggage compartment/six-table ‘refreshment’ diner/coach. The other three RDC-1’s normally operated on this train were built in a coach configuration with reclining seats. The Daylight Speedliner when introduced in 1956 reduced the railroad’s operating cost by almost half over the steam hauled Washingtonian passenger train that it replaced. It operated until January 21, 1963. Richard D. Kehm collection, Washington DC Chapter NRHS.
