COMMUNITY BUILDING IS a core commandment for all Muslims, everywhere. Its framework is broad inclusion. Its design is unity of purpose not opinion. Its motif is a disposition to act together on knowledge for the good of all people, not in the interest of a party or group. This is the value structure of the US council of Muslim Organizations, making it an instrument through which our whole community can call to all that is good, champion what is right and stand against what is wrong— even when it means calling our own to account, regardless of wealth or social status. This is not just talk. Council founders have already itemized more than 30 internal challenges to our community and begun enumerating their solutions. These include:

Ethnic and urban-suburban local divisions
Youth voices absent from decision-making
Scant national presence of Muslim women

This causes other problems:

Many mosques, but little local and neighborhood impact
Inability to articulate Islam on a human level
Muslim complacency in the face of mounting social problems. Externally, a vociferous cabal of extremists increasingly maligns Islam to turn America dangerously against itself. Countering the falsifiers seeking to mislead and betray American society is a communal imperative. Together, participants will identify challenges affecting Muslim women, develop practical solutions, share their ideas, and help select one project to move forward as a community pilot.

Recent reporting by The Intercept raises serious concerns about military materiel reportedly transported to Israel aboard United Airlines commercial passenger flights. The investigation cites thousands of documented shipments, including cargo reportedly destined for Israeli weapons manufacturers and military facilities.

Commercial aviation should connect people and communities, not serve as part of a military supply chain.

228 Muslim Americans are now serving in elected office and the judiciary across 26 states.

That’s the headline. But the real story isn’t the number—it’s what built it.

From 87 city council members to 58 school board members, 44 state officials, 17 elected judges, 11 mayors, and 4 members of Congress, this progress reflects years of voter registration, candidate development, civic education, coalition building, and local organizing.

Muslim voter registration has risen from 60% in 2016 to 85% in 2025—a significant shift in civic participation.

But the map remains uneven. New Jersey leads with 46 Muslim officials, followed by Michigan with 38 and California with 20, while 24 states still have no Muslim representation identified in the directory.

Representation is not the finish line. It is one measure of what becomes possible when communities build lasting civic infrastructure—engaged voters, prepared leaders, strong organizations, and enduring coalitions.

The next chapter is about continuing to build that infrastructure and expanding participation across the country.
