MEET OUR PRESENTERS for the 2019 National Family and Community Engagement Conference, hosted by the Institute for Educational Leadership! Natasha and Laura will be detailing the rights of immigrant students as well as best practices for schools to adopt in enrolling and educating immigrant students.
Natasha Quiroga is senior counsel for the Educational Opportunities Project, where she directs the Parental Readiness and Empowerment Program (PREP). After graduating from law school, Natasha served as the first executive director for Educación Para Nuestro Futuro (formerly Escuela Bolivia) in Arlington, Virginia. She later joined a boutique education firm in Washington, D.C., as an associate where she advised state and local education agencies on compliance with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, the Higher Education Opportunities Act, and the Workforce Investment Act. Natasha received her J.D. from American University Washington College of Law and her Master’s in International Politics from American University School of International Service. She received her B.B.A. in Marketing and B.A. In Plan II Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. Natasha is fluent in Spanish and is licensed to practice in New York and the District of Columbia. Natasha is a 2017 Presidential Leadership Scholar.
Laura has 18 years of experience working in education, refugee resettlement, and social work. While in education, she worked as a district level manager for immigrant family and community engagement as well as a school social worker. Laura also worked for Bridging Refugee Youth and Children’s Services (BRYCS) managing their national technical assistance initiative to federal Refugee School Impact Grantees. Laura has facilitated professional development on building the capacity of teachers and school systems to engage immigrant families in their children’s education, language access, cultural competency, equity, unaccompanied immigrant children, immigrant family reunification, and refugee resettlement. Laura holds a Master’s degree in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor’s degree in Education.
