Congested highways, overflowing sewers and corroding bridges are constant reminders of the looming crisis that jeopardizes our nation's prosperity and our quality of life. Today is the 50th anniversary of the transformative Clean Water Act, which Celebrating progress to improve the quality of rivers. Under the CWA, EPA has implemented pollution control programs such as setting wastewater standards for industry and developing national water quality criteria recommendations for pollutants in surface waters.

The 50th anniversary of the CWA is a time to reflect on the positive change that proactive legislation can have on public health and safety, and a reminder that more needs to be done to ensure our water sources are safe and reliable for generations to come.
