Howard University Alumni Association (HUAA BMI) Black Male Initiative "The educational system of a country is worthless unless it [revolutionizes the social order]. Woodson

Men of scholarship, and prophetic insight, must show us the right way and lead us into light which is shining brighter and brighter." ~ Carter G. Under the leadership of HUAA President Kimberly Singleton The Howard University Alumni Association Black Male Initiative Program was developed after recognizing the disproportionate ration of male-to-female students being enrolled into Howard University,

as well as colleges and universities around the country. HUAA BMI Chair Larry Dunlap, along with Co-Chairs Valarie Maholmes, Father Darryl James, and Akil Kamau established the foundational goals to be successful in this program, which include; providing support from alumni, community, fraternal, and academic organizations, as well as identifying academic and financial resources to assist young men in their matriculation. Tutoring, college tours, life skills, and mentoring are some of the program activities that will be provided. It is not our intent to discriminate against any student based on race and/or gender, and we will encourage students to go to the college or university of their choosing, regardless of the school’s historical make or background. We do however, based on experience and studies, recognize the critical role that HBCUs play in providing the support and sense of community when ushering Black male students along the road to becoming empowered and successful men. Taking the village approach to raising our children, we welcome and encourage men and women of all ages and cultures, alumni, friends of Howard, and current students to offer their assistance in accomplishing our mission.
