AIHA is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening health systems in developing and transitioning nations around the globe.

AIHA is unlike many organizations that provide technical assistance because our partnerships and programs often rely on the commitment of professional time and energy provided by volunteers on both sides. Our twinning model presumes that healthcare professionals overseas are more receptive to new ideas when they work together with colleagues who face the same challenges in their own day-to-day practice. For more than two decades, AIHA has been applying its unique twinning methodology in more than 160 capacity building partnerships and initiatives in some 30 countries spanning the globe. Through our partnerships, more than 150 US hospitals or health systems and over 55 schools of the health professions have played a critical role in international health systems strengthening efforts. AIHA's programs address critical issues such as HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, maternal and child health, blood safety, primary care, emergency and disaster preparedness, and health professions education and development.

Last week, AIHA wrapped up a multidisciplinary emergency response training at Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila as part of the Dr. Joseph R. Masci Legacy Project. For two years, AIHA has linked the PGH team with international experts – particularly experts from NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation – as a way to foster development of new and updated pandemic, mass casualty, and other strategic plans thanks to support from the project. AIHA recently collaborated with the Women, Youth and Children Affairs Directorate at the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS) to conduct a five-day Training of Trainers (TOT) focused on the prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment (SEAH).

The training - which was attended by 25 staff members from the EPSS headquarters and branch offices - covered various targeted strategies to improve equality and safety in the workplace.

In particular, attendees gained critical knowledge and skills on identifying and preventing SEAH incidents; providing timely and appropriate responses to reported incidents; case reporting procedures; investigation processes; protecting the rights, safety, and confidentiality of survivors; establishing safe and confidential reporting channels; and appropriately coordinating case management support for survivors.

During the closing session, Director of Women, Children and Youth Affairs Directorate Ms. Alemtsehay Data said the training would make a significant contribution to expanding SEAH awareness across EPSS headquarters and branch offices. This, she stressed, will create an accountable and respectful work environment and strengthen the institution’s case management and response mechanisms.

NYC Health + Hospitals / Elmhurst ophthalmologist and surgical retina specialist Dr. Ronni Lieberman recently conducted a series of lectures and clinical trainings for PGH healthcare professionals, focusing on HIV-related eye diseases, ophthalmic manifestations of systemic diseases, and pediatric eye diseases as part of the Dr. Joseph R. Masci Legacy Project.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange, skills development, and strengthening of collaboration among PGH’s Infectious Diseases, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and Pediatric services.

Dr. Christine Ramos, a medical specialist at PGH’s Division of Infectious Diseases and the hospital’s HIV Treatment Hub, summed up the experience stating, “Dr. Lieberman's expertise and generosity have contributed significantly to strengthening the clinical capabilities of our healthcare teams and enhancing patient-centered care and we look forward to sustaining and further strengthening this collaboration with her and AIHA – all with the shared goal of advancing multidisciplinary education, clinical practice, and the quality of care available to our patients at PGH.”

The 26th International AIDS Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, concluded on July 31. AIHA was honored to participate in the MedEd Africa 2026 Conference, held July 6–8, under the theme "Continuing to Shape the Future of Medical Education in Africa."

The conference brought together 800+ participants, including medical professionals, educators, researchers, policymakers, and students from across Africa and beyond.

The event featured engaging discussions on innovation, digital literacy, leadership and governance, and strategic partnerships for health workforce strengthening and health sector transformation.

AIHA showcased its contributions to medical education, health workforce development, and strengthening Ethiopia's healthcare system through collaborative partnership programs.

The conference provided an opportunity to share knowledge, build partnerships, and strengthen relationships with medical schools, government institutions, development partners, and other stakeholders committed to advancing medical education in Africa.

AIHA’s team in Ethiopia participated in CSOs Week 2026 at the Addis International Convention Center March 5-7. The event brought together more than 120 civil society organizations (CSOs) from Ethiopia and Kenya.

According to Kidest Hailu, AIHA's Country Director for Ethiopia, "It was particularly rewarding to connect with new organizations, while also renewing relationships with long-standing partners and colleagues. These interactions fostered meaningful dialogue around shared priorities and challenges, and opened the door to exploring potential areas for collaboration."

She continued, "Overall, participation in the CSO Week strengthened AIHA’s network, enhanced visibility of our programs, and reaffirmed our commitment to partnership-driven approaches in advancing health and development outcomes in Ethiopia."

From primary healthcare and infection prevention in Ethiopia to HIV-related services and pandemic preparedness and response in the Philippines, AIHA is working toward our vision of a world with access to quality healthcare for everyone, everywhere!

In the Western and Central Visayas Regions of the Philippines, AIHA has been working with community-based organizations to strengthen their knowledge and ability to combat HIV/AIDS.
