Rebuilding Together Repairing homes, revitalizing communities, rebuilding lives. We envision safe homes and communities for everyone.

Rebuilding Together is the leading national nonprofit organization repairing the homes of people in need and revitalizing our communities. Through its national network of affiliates, Rebuilding Together works proactively and collaboratively with community leaders, long-term residents, funders and volunteers to foster dialogue and create safe, healthy communities together across the country. In 1973, a small group of people in Midland, Texas, realized a growing need in their community. Homes in their community had fallen into disrepair and their neighbors could not afford to fix them on their own. The group volunteered their time and skills to rehabilitate the homes of their neighbors. Realizing the potential impact of this work, the group formed Christmas in April, with the intent of performing repair and rehabilitation work in their community every April. News of the group’s good work spread slowly, but eventually achieved national recognition. The mission spread beyond the idea of providing service once a year in April to bringing together partners from all walks of life to help our neighbors year-round. We opened the national office in 1988 and became Rebuilding Together.

Would you drain your whole pool because of one leaf?

Of course not. So why do we let perfectly good homes fall into disrepair?

For the cost of building 1 new home, Rebuilding Together can repair 18.

Instead of replacing homes, we fix them — making them safer, more accessible, and easier to maintain for veterans, older adults, people with disabilities, and families with young children.

Every roof patched keeps a family safely housed.
Every ramp built helps a neighbor live independently.
Every home repaired preserves affordable housing before it disappears for good.

For Grace Nez, home is where generations connect. She has lived in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, for more than 20 years, sharing her home and her heritage with her grandson.

In recent years, home no longer provided the safety or comfort she needed. With a broken window, no handrails for mobility and electricity problems the issues were piling up and being on a fixed income, Grace felt repairs were out of reach.

Rebuilding Together Sandoval County stepped in to help with repairs, because instead of replacing homes, we fix them — making them safer, more accessible, and easier to maintain for people like Grace.

Our country’s approach to affordable housing isn’t getting us anywhere. We can’t build our way out of it if we let the affordable homes we already have quietly disappear from our communities.

But for the same cost as building 1 new home, Rebuilding Together can fix 18.

For our older neighbors like Edward, keeping up with home repairs as you age can be challenging.

A combat veteran, Edward needed critical but simple repairs to his home to make it safer and more comfortable for everyday living.

With a team of volunteers Rebuilding Together: restored water access to the bathroom, installed grab bars to reduce fall risk and installed a handrail at the entrance to the home.

Simple fixes like these make the home liveable for Edward, and one more affordable home is preserved.

For the same cost as building 1 new home, Rebuilding Together can fix 18.

Something big is coming.

For almost 40 years, Rebuilding Together has been working everyday to create safer homes for our neighbors.

On 9/30, we want everyone to know addressing the housing crisis isn’t just about building more homes. It’s also about fixing the homes we already have.

Back in February, we were featured in Wirecutter (A New York Times publication) covering what it takes to age in place. But it’s worth talking about again because aging in place is one of the most personal and important public policy issues of our time.

Our neighbors can feel profoundly alone when mobility declines or routines disappear. We see how much that isolation is tied to the condition of a home. When steps are crumbling or a roof is leaking, stress becomes constant.
And that’s where we come in. After Rebuilding Together makes repairs:

- Nearly 90% of neighbors who hadn’t previously planned to age in place say they are now likely to do so after repairs.

- 86% of neighbors who previously struggled to enter and exit their homes say it becomes easier after our work.

- 60% report feeling a greater sense of inclusion in their neighborhood after their home is repaired.

- 67% of neighbors who felt highly nervous or stressed about their home say that stress decreased after repairs.

Our older neighbors deserve to age in place with dignity.

Katie Holtman first learned about Rebuilding Together when she joined a clean up crew in Houston after Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

It was an experience that stuck with her and when she eventually moved to Seattle she got involved with Rebuilding Together Seattle - something she says felt grounding and familiar.

Today, Katie is part of Rebuilding Together Seattle’s Board of Directors and shared more with us on how Rebuilding Together has changed her view of what it means to be a neighbor.
