Round Edges

Round Edges The ultimate goal of Round Edges is to inspire people to lead inspiring lives. Choice is the most influential and empowering tool we have.

Round Edges is a creative-based youth enrichment program designed to build communities of creative, knowledgeable and inspired beings through providing artistic and life-skills workshops that empower youth through education, experience and expression. In doing so it is the intent to encourage and inspire creativity of the youth by providing them with an array of activities that increases their exp

osure to different experiences. Increased knowledge and experience leads to more choices; choices they could make to empower themselves throughout their lives. Choices move us from one plane to another. They take us toward our dreams. The capacity to make a choice indicates options from which to choose and intelligence by which to evaluate those options. Round Edges is committed to offering challenging, imaginative and fun workshops that expose youth to experiences that may inform the choices they make for themselves in the future. We connect with the youth by approaching youth-oriented community organizations, create a curriculum around art education and/or life-skills and bring in local artists and community members to facilitate workshops around those topics. The feedback from the kids and the facilitators has been equally amazing. The facilitators get to connect with the youth in their community and pass on knowledge and the youth get tangible evidence that they can do/be whatever they want. Sometimes all you need is an example. If you have an idea for a workshop, would like to facilitate a workshop or know someone who is interested in doing so, please contact Nicole (Seed Logic) at [email protected].

Today, Xavier Brown facilitated the Worm Composting workshop with the youth at Covenant House Washington. Worm composting is using worms to recycle food scraps and other organic material into a valuable soil amendment called vermicompost, or worm compost. Worms eat food scraps, which become compost as they pass through the worm's body. Compost exits the worm through its' tail end. This compost can then be used to grow plants. To understand why vermicompost is good for plants, remember that the worms are eating nutrient-rich fruit and vegetable scraps, and turning them into nutrient-rich compost.

Xavier Brown is a DC Master Gardener and The Green Scheme's Director of Urban Agriculture. He received his B.A. degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He is a Master Watershed Steward, Lead Citizen Forster with Casey Trees and on the Executive Committee of DC State Fair and was the 2013 Environmental Leadership Program fellow.
