Nowruz Commission

Nowruz Commission Nowruz Commission is a non-profit global multi-cultural public diplomacy organization dedicated to promoting the spirit of Nowruz.

Nowruz Commission is a non-religious, non-political organization that focuses on bringing people of different cultures together to celebrate Nowruz. Nowruz means “New Day” in Persian. It signifies the celebration of the first day of Spring at the exact moment of the Vernal Equinox. Legend has it that it started 3,000 years ago in Persia. In the beginning, people of all origins celebrated it togeth

er. However, over time, this togetherness was lost. Each culture celebrated it on its own and in its own community. That was true until March 17, 2010, when for the first time in known history, nine countries and communities came together to form the Nowruz Commission, and once again celebrate this time-honored tradition together at the Library of Congress.

***

Nowruz, literally meaning “new day,” has lived up to its name in wondrous ways. For at least three millennia, it has provided the supreme occasion for renewal and rejuvenation. The power behind its inexhaustible appeal resides in a simple truth: humans need a ritual that transcends distinct and distinguishable group identities to celebrate our common humanity. Nowruz does so by inviting everyone to contemplate nature as it puts on its most magnificent dress at springtime and to synchronize personal and communal relations with the spirit of nature. Pointing to nature’s ability to renew itself each and every year, Nowruz manifests intense human yearnings that transcend all divisions. The roots of Nowruz are scattered in myth and in history in much of western Asia and is anchored most profoundly in Persian mythology, where it marks the beginning of the calendar. In recent centuries, as Empires in India and Iran, In Anatolia and Central Asia gave way to the modern countries, Nowruz has been celebrated in accordance with myriad local customs and traditions. Everywhere, however, it offers the promise of a human community in which a race of all races can create a new global culture beyond all nationhood and nationality. It aspires to no less than a human community as beautiful and colorful as nature on the first day of spring.

Ten years ago, on March 17, 2010 at the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, your Nowruz Commission was born, reviving the 3000 year old ancient tradition of celebrating Nowruz *together*.

*Together*, we celebrated the arrival of Spring each year more gloriously than the year before.

*Together*, we put good thoughts into good words and turned good words into good deeds.

Over the last decade, we saved 21 young lives with open heart surgeries, provided growth opportunities for young and exceptionally accomplished individuals, helped immigrants raise their upward mobility, dug a well in remote parts of Africa to help get clean drinking water to 300 families, and provided 1,000 backpacks filled with essentials to children in refugee camps. In 2017, at our last annual gala, we announced our plan to bring the good thoughts, good words, good deeds of NC to America. We went to West Virginia, partnered with public entities, and raised funds to serve our friends.

This year, the pandemic has kept us apart, but our hearts are connected. Now, with the arrival of Spring comes a time of renewal: the earth is waking up. Tulips are blooming, cherry blossoms are smiling, the grass is growing greener, and the Spring breeze is the harbinger of good news. As the darkness of winter fades with the light of Spring, these challenging times too shall pass.

On this Nowruz, we wish the world a speedy return to health, prosperity, peace, and joy.

While we may be physically apart, we remain together in our shared celebration of the time-honored tradition of Nowruz.

Dear Nowruz Commission friends:

As we announced at our gala event in March 2017, we will not be hosting our annual Nowruz gala in March 2018.

Nowruz Commission has two primary objectives driving our mission: first, to promote and preserve “Togetherness” at Nowruz, and second, to use that togetherness to do good work. Good Thoughts, Good Words, Good Deeds — six words and thirty letters are the foundation of our mission.
