The Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) is dedicated to Asian Pacific American legal scholarship and cultural awareness at the American University Washington College of Law and within the District of Columbia area. APALSA continues to strive in its goal to bring cultural awareness to the student body at the American University Washington College of Law and to the legal communi

Please join APALSA for our final event in our Speaker Series! We will be joined by two attornies from Covington and Burling, Pooja Shah Kothari and Jamin Koo.

Pooja Shah Kothari has experience counseling clients on tax controversy matters at the Federal and state level. In addition, Pooja advises various tax-exempt and nonprofit organizations on a wide range of issues, such as federal tax exemption, unrelated business income tax, private benefit, inurement, and other tax rules, as well as entity formation and other corporate governance matters.

Jamin Koo advises clients across a broad range of tax issues, including domestic and international tax planning and acquisition and financing transactions. His expertise includes taxation of debt instruments, derivatives, and other financial instruments and business restructuring.

Please join APALSA in hosting some of our recent alumni as speakers! We will be joined by three recent alumni: Eric Ettorre, Irene Ly, and Andrew Park. This will be an opportunity for current students to talk to recent graduates and learn about their experiences!

Eric Ettorre graduated from WCL in 2021 and currently works in Public Law and Policy at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld. While at WCL he served as Senior Staff of the American University Business Law Review and the Treasurer of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Honor Society.

Irene Ly graduated from WCL in 2021 and currently works as Policy Counsel at Common Sense Media. While at WCL she was a Senior Staffer of the Administrative Law Review and the President of the Communications and Media Law Society.

Andrew Park graduated from WCL in 2021 and currently works as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Jeannie J. Hong. While at WCL he served as the Editor-in-Chief of The Criminal Law Practitioner, served on the Executive Board of the Moot Court Honor Society, and was a student attorney for the Criminal Justice Clinic.

Justice McKenna was born in Japan and attended Yokota High School in Tokyo during her childhood. McKenna then graduated from University of Hawaii at Mamoa with a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese. She then earned her Juris Doctor from William S. Richardson School of Law. She first served as an associate at Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel until 1987 and then served as general counsel at Otaka, Inc. until 1990. Three years later, She became an assistant professor at University of Hawaii Law School and was appointed as a District Court judge on November 30, 1993 and elevated to Circuit Courts in June 1995.

On January 25, 2011, Governor Neil Abercrombie nominated McKenna to a seat on the Hawaii Supreme Court. She was unanimously approved by the Hawaii Senate and sworn in 2011. McKenna is the first openly gay judge to serve on the Hawaii Supreme Court.
