🚨 Sudan is currently facing the world’s largest humanitarian disaster, yet it remains drastically underreported.

Famine has officially been declared in parts of the country. Right now, 25 million people are facing crisis levels of food insecurity. Ongoing conflict and mass internal displacement have shattered communities, halting agriculture, commerce, and vital aid deliveries.

With a crisis this complex, we cannot afford to look away. Understanding the reality is the first step toward action.

It's a busy week on Capitol Hill. With Agricultural Appropriations facing a floor vote in the House and a markup in the Senate Ag Appropriations Subcommittee, it is critical that Congress protect food and nutrition programs.

Eric Mitchell: “Instability in the Middle East has driven up fuel costs and complicated access to emergency humanitarian aid. Combined with persistently high food prices, these pressures are hitting hardest for people and communities in the United States and abroad who are already struggling to afford and access food. During these trying times for those struggling to make ends meet, it is more important than ever that we make ending hunger a priority for our country.”

🌍 From Mississippi to the Global Stage: Building Food Resilience 🌾

In an increasingly volatile world, geopolitical conflicts, soaring energy costs, and supply chain disruptions continue to choke off vital food systems—disproportionately impacting the world's most vulnerable communities. In 2025 alone, up to 720 million people worldwide faced hunger.

So, how do we build sustainable food security when local communities are so easily destabilized by outside global forces? The answer lies in local resilience.

As Eric Mitchell highlights, the blueprint for ending hunger - whether in the United States or around the world - must be woven directly into the unique fabric of local societies. To solve massive, interconnected global problems, we have to break food systems down into their local contexts.

And policy must follow.

We recently had the opportunity to convene a first-of-its-kind Hunger Free Mississippi Conference in Jackson. With nonprofit leaders, elected officials, businesses, farmers, healthcare professionals, and more, we dove into examining and planning around the barriers and opportunities for a food secure Mississippi. As Alliance president Eric Mitchell mentions in this short video, "one thing became clear, hunger is deeply connected to policy, agriculture, health, economic opportunity, and community wellbeing."

Recently, Eric Mitchell and Nathan Magrath had the opportunity to visit Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes to learn about all the fantastic work they are doing for their West Michigan community. As the largest independent food bank in the state, KLF has a huge impact on individuals, families, schools, pantries, and other outreach activities. Reorganizing the Food and Nutrition Service the Latest Blow to Effective Federal Food Assistance

Alliance members hold major concerns that experienced, long-term expert employees will be lost, while inefficiencies will be added to key program administration tasks such as grant and waiver approvals. The reorganization of FNS follows a devastating 30 percent reduction in the FNS workforce through layoffs and resignations since early 2025.

“This reorganization of FNS is reckless and will lead to massive confusion and delays in service delivery,” stated Minerva Delgado, Director of Coalitions and Advocacy at the Alliance to End Hunger. “Millions of people across the country rely on federal food assistance programs. These programs work well, but this latest plan could make these programs less effective and efficient, continuing a pattern of ill-advised actions that have the effect of degrading food assistance at a time of rising costs for food and other basic necessities.”

On Thursday advocates, farmers, chefs, organizations, companies, universities, elected officials and others from across the great state of Mississippi gathered for an energizing Hunger Free Mississippi Conference.

Throughout the day we heard from some of the Mississippi's most dedicated fighters for a hunger free state, and learned about the unique challenges and opportunities facing the issue of hunger. From the gulf coast to the Delta region to the Choctaw nation and beyond, the diversity of peoples, cultures, experiences, and expertise combined to display an inspiring and promising foundation for a vibrant future.

While there are way too many people to thank for making the day possible, we want to send a special thanks to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Mississippi Food Bank Collaborative, Alcorn State University, and the Mississippi Food Policy Council for co-hosting the event. We also want to send a special and heartfelt shoutout to Foot Print Farms for both feeding and teaching us about the incredible relationship between food, culture, and health.

We hope we will be able to keep this energy going and push our collective efforts towards a hunger-free Mississippi and beyond!
