Advocating at Capitol Hill 🏦🇺🇸

Last week, NHCOA was joined by partners and older adult advocates on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to raise awareness of issues affecting aging communities nationwide. Alongside the Diverse Elders Coalition, Latinos for a Secure Retirement, and Vida Senior Centers, we met with Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Rep. John Larson, and Congressman Greg Casar's offices to advocate for policies supporting healthy aging, economic security, and civic participation.

During these meetings, we emphasized the importance of reauthorizing and funding the Older Americans Act ( ), advancing the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act (SSIRA), supporting the Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention ( ) Act, ensuring access to voting through the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and strengthening retirement protections through the Caucus Bill. Advocates also shared personal experiences that illustrated the urgent need for equitable resources and protections for aging communities.

We are grateful to our partners, volunteers, and congressional offices for their time and commitment to advancing policies that help older adults age with dignity and security.🙌

On May 21, NHCOA’s Capitol Hill Briefing brought together voices from across the advocacy and healthcare landscape for an afternoon focused on the realities facing Latino older adults today.

Dr. Yanira Cruz, President & CEO of NHCOA, opened the briefing with welcoming remarks focused on the importance of elevating Latino voices and advancing aging policies. The discussion was moderated by Jeff Cruz, Executive Director of the Latinos for a Secure Retirement (LSR) Coalition, who also shared key insights on the importance of protecting Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The panel featured Guillermo Chacon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS, who discussed the ongoing impact of HIV on Latino communities. Jennifer Pollack, Senior Director, Access and Regulatory Policy at the Alzheimer's Association, addressed the increasing challenges of Alzheimer’s disease, caregiving, and healthcare access for aging populations.

Kim Love, Senior Director of Government Affairs and Strategic Alliance at Amgen, concluded the program with closing remarks, reaffirming the importance of continued advocacy and collaboration to improve health outcomes for older adults.

The NHCOA also extends its gratitude to Amgen, Eisai Global, PhRMA, and Merck for supporting this important dialogue and helping to initiate these critical conversations on Capitol Hill.
