📍May Neighborhood Spotlight: U.S. Capitol Visitor Center

📍Located two blocks from the U.S. Capitol, TMH is in the heart of the city. Our residence hall is, unsurprisingly, home to many Hill staffers, interns, and fellows due to this proximity. Guests are welcome to visit the Capitol to learn more about the basics of U.S. government and the Capitol complex, stop by the gift shop, and dine in the café (don’t miss the Capitol dome dessert!).

📍Guided tours of the Capitol are offered on a regular basis. Visitors will see an introductory film before being guided to the Crypt, the Rotunda, and other noteworthy points.

📍Visitors are encouraged to plan their visit in advance. Visitors can reserve their spot on a tour online, with slots opening 90 days in advance, or request a tour through their Senator’s or U.S. Representative’s office. Note that tours can be especially busy during the spring and summer months, so registering early maximizes visit options.

📍Specialty tours, focusing on art, suffrage movement icons, and other topics, are also offered at various times from Monday to Friday. Tickets can be obtained inside the Capitol Visitors Center on the day of the tour and are a unique way to see the Capitol.

📍The Capitol Visitors Center is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exceptions of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Inauguration Day. Tour tickets are free. Visitors are encouraged to review prohibited items prior to their visit and prepare for potentially long security wait times.

On April 18, we hosted our Spring Fling—a time to enjoy our beautiful garden with our friends and family. 💐

Our amazing kitchen team prepared a delicious spread of finger sandwiches, sweet treats, tea, and lemonade. Between friendly games of croquet and catching up with old friends, we couldn’t have asked for better weather! ☀

A special “thank you” to everyone who attended and supported our event, especially , who generously donated two self-care boxes for our giveaway. ❤

📍April Neighborhood Spotlight: United States Botanic Garden

📍The United States Botanic Garden (USBG) is the oldest continuously operating public garden in the country. Aiming to inspire people to appreciate plants, the USBG offers a peaceful oasis on the grounds of the Capitol. With exhibits featuring art made from plants, interactive elements, and the opportunity to learn something new; a conservatory with plants from across the country and the world; a jungle canopy; and outdoor gardens to wander through, visitors are encouraged to visit the USBG throughout the year to appreciate the new displays and see what’s in bloom.

📍Don’t miss the exhibit America’s State Flowers: An America250 Celebration. In celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary, the USBG will feature the official flowers of each U.S. state and territory from April 10 to October 12, 2026.

📍The USBG is open daily, with the exception of December 25. Admission during normal operating hours is free, and no tickets are required. Some programs and special events charge a small fee.

One major perk of living at TMH is the 13 meals a week that are included in Room & Board; there’s no need to worry about cooking or doing the dishes! Breakfast is served daily, with brunch hours on the weekends, and dinner is offered from Sunday to Friday. With custom-made breakfast sandwiches, Taco Tuesdays, and other varied meals on the menu, our kitchen team works hard so residents can focus on making the most of their time in DC.

In recognition of their hard work, our kitchen team was recently acknowledged by Eurest, our hospitality partner, for going above and beyond by working day and night to keep our residents well-fed during February’s historic snowstorm. Chef Johnny, Aly, and Sutora received HERO Awards for their service and dedication during this time. Coleman from Eurest-USA stopped by TMH to present them with their awards.

Kudos to Chef Johnny, Aly, and Sutora for their efforts to serve the TMH community every day. ❤ 👏

A few weeks ago, our Executive Director, Jennifer Sharp, had the incredible opportunity to sit down with prominent news station WTOP and share more about TMH during Women's History Month.

For more than 130 years, TMH has been providing safe, affordable housing to young women living in DC. While much has changed since our founding in the 1800s, our mission remains the same. What started as a couple of bedrooms has turned into a 120-room residence hall, with residents from across the globe and exciting renovations on the horizon.

To our residents, alumni, staff, and community members, thank you for being a part of this truly special place!

Affordable, safe housing for young women continues at Thompson-Markward Hall near the Supreme Court, offering community, meals and a central D.C. location.

💜Happy Women’s History Month! 💜

As we celebrate this important month, we want to take a moment to share a bit more about one of the incredible, trailblazing women whose generosity made TMH the organization it is today.

💜 A native Washingtonian, Flora Markward Thompson was born in 1860 into a modest, middle-class family. She began working as a teenager to support herself and her mother after her father’s premature death. At that time, women were limited to only certain jobs, and they were often offered low wages with poor working conditions.

💜 In 1896, at the age of 36, Flora married prominent Washingtonian and financier John W. Thompson. Because she understood the difficulties of being a young, working woman at that time, Flora was deeply sympathetic to other women in similar situations and joined the Young Woman’s Christian Home (YWCH) Board of Trustees, guiding the organization to what it is today.

💜 Flora passed away in 1931 as we were constructing our current residence. She left behind $250,000 in her will, the equivalent of more than $5 million today, and asked that a memorial be built in her mother’s and husband’s memory. With her gift, we built the south wing, effectively doubling the size of our home.

💜 To show our gratitude, the front of our building is engraved with “Thompson-Markward Memorial,” and in 1968, the YWCH was renamed Thompson-Markward Hall.

💜 We are eternally grateful for Mrs. Thompson and all the other incredible women who have made their mark on this organization. It is because of them that we can be a “home away from home” for hundreds of women each year.
