Civil Air Patrol's National Capital Wing

Civil Air Patrol's National Capital Wing Volunteers serving America's communities, saving lives, and shaping futures. As a Total Force partner and auxiliary of the U.S.

Since Civil Air Patrol’s formation during the earliest days of World War II, this vigilant organization of volunteer Airmen has been committed to service to America. Founded on Dec. 1, 1941, to mobilize the nation's civilian aviation resources for national defense service, CAP has evolved into a premier public service organization that still carries out emergency service missions when needed — in

the air and on the ground. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol is there to search for and find the lost, provide comfort in times of disaster, and work to keep the homeland safe. Its 56,000 members selflessly devote their time, energy, and expertise toward the well-being of their communities while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace/STEM education and helping shape future leaders through CAP’s cadet program. Civil Air Patrol’s missions for America are many, and today’s adults and cadets perform their duties with the same vigilance as its founding members — preserving CAP’s 80-year legacy of service while maintaining its commitment to nearly 1,500 communities nationwide.

This past Sunday, 100 students graduated from our cadet encampment — a week-long opportunity for Civil Air Patrol cadets to develop leadership skills, investigate the aerospace sciences and related careers, commit to a habit of regular exercise, and solidify their moral character. In addition to those participating from our wing, a quarter of students came from other CAP wings. Our cadet encampment included cadets from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, California, Florida, New Mexico, and overseas from Germany.

Throughout day six of our cadet encampment, students participated in various physical activities. Each flight rotated through numerous stations featuring an activity challenging their strength and tenacity. From tug-of-war to the wheelbarrow walk, the cadets persevered through each, building camaraderie as they came together as teams.

Cadet Col. Gerald Mon Pere assisted in these activities, saying: "Building healthy, active lifestyles in our cadets is a top priority of the encampment program. Activities like these introduce cadets to a positive, competitive environment to practice and develop physical excellence, which they will hopefully carry into their later lives."

Throughout day five of our cadet encampment, students navigated a compass course, challenging their teamwork and communication skills. Students also engaged in various classroom activities, including presentations on ownership and upholding Civil Air Patrol's core values — integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect. In preparation for graduation, cadre members and guidon bearers finished the day perfecting pass-in-review procedures, rehearsing their commands and formations for Sunday's ceremony.
