On April 16, 1862, over 3,000 Black Washingtonians were freed, but the government paid enslavers, not the people who labored for free.

Emancipation was just the beginning. The work of reparations and self-determination continues.

After years of organizing and an 8-month fight to override the governor’s veto, Maryland lawmakers gave final approval in December 2025 to a bill creating the Maryland Reparations Commission.

From California to Evanston to Maryland, the reparations movement is building momentum, and the work continues. We stand in solidarity with everyone who made this victory a reality!

Here’s what the 23-member commission will do:

🔹 Assess federal, state, and local policies from 1877 to 1965 (post-Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras)

🔹 Examine how public and private institutions benefited from discriminatory policies

🔹 Recommend appropriate reparations, from formal apologies to monetary compensation to social services

At iF, we’re proud to support this movement locally. We’ve been convening leaders and organizations advancing reparations through the DC Reparations Coalition, which helped secure passage of the DC Reparations Bill. We continue to support local advocates working to turn reparations from policy into reality in DC.

Our second Roots Rising cohort gathered for their first in-person convening, and it was transformative.

Facilitated by iF in partnership with Michelle Shireen Muri of Freedom Conspiracy, Roots Rising is supporting fundraising leads from Black-led and people of the global majority-led organizations across the country to strengthen their financial and fundraising capacity.

Together, we explored our relationships with money and financial trauma, mapped our communities, and built fundraising calendars rooted in Community-Centric Fundraising principles.

Swipe through to hear what cohort member, Shoareged Phillpotts, MPH, LMSW, Co-Founder & Executive Director of It Takes A Village Collaborative is taking away from the experience.

We’re grateful to be in community with these incredible leaders. Stay tuned to hear more from our cohort members as we continue learning together!

Readiness is resistance.

Every iF staff member received a go-bag this year, not out of fear, but out of care. In moments of crisis, preparedness is power.

What’s inside: Emergency supplies, first aid, water purification, tools for survival.

Readiness doesn’t mean giving in to fear. It means refusing to be caught unprepared when systems fail us, because they do. Black feminism teaches us that survival is communal.

In the face of rising fascism, preparedness is how we protect each other and sustain our communities.

Do you have a go-bag? What’s in it? Share in the comments.

Authoritarianism depends on control, but Black feminism offers an antidote.

Rooted in the lived experiences of Black women, Black feminism provides a framework that strengthens the conditions authoritarian systems seek to weaken: shared knowledge, collective care, and material autonomy.

This series explores Black feminism as a theory and offers a path toward practical application. In today’s political environment, where attacks on our autonomy and democratic participation are constant, Black feminism provides essential tools for resilience and care.

Up next: iF staff will explore foraging as Black feminist practice.

At iF, we ask: What iF Black people were paid the debt they were owed?

Our D.C. Special Edition Reparations Daily(ish) Zine, created in partnership with BLIS collective uplifts voices like Samiryah Chaney, who asks: “If reparations were realized, how would the lives of Black houseless youth and those in foster care communities in D.C. look different?”

Her answer: Real power, protection, and peace. Safe housing. The freedom to build community without fear of displacement.

On this , we stand in solidarity with the movement leaders fighting to make reparations a reality.

The iF team will join the convening Lift Your Voice: Leading with Courage, Purpose, and Story for a session titled Tools for Change.

Hosted by Georgetown University Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership, this session will explore how filmmaking can surface essential truths about community experiences and challenge us the systems that shape them.

This especially critical in today’s volatile environment, which calls on philanthropy and social sector leaders to lead with vision, purpose, and a clear north star.

Drawing on iF’s impact-driven film work, including Diminished Returns and the Let’s GO DMV! series, we’ll share practical lessons for bringing film into your toolkit for change.

To sustain our movement, rest and reflection are just as necessary as resilience and resistance. This year reminded us of that truth, and it’s tested us.

From federal DEI rollbacks and the firings of Black women to the kidnapping of our immigrant neighbors and the rise of anti-Black policies, our futures are under active threat.

At iF, we’re doubling down on the work that builds a self-determined future for Black people and people of the global majority, with our communities leading the way.

This moment calls for clarity, courage, and deep investment in community-led solutions and truth-telling through art and story.
