It’s bad enough that Citizen Vigilante, a movie whose lead is a mass killer of migrants, went viral thanks in part to Elon Musk, who not only endorsed it in a post on X but made it free for 48 hours. So many people sought out the film, free and paid, that it became a top-selling video on both Amazon Prime Video and the Apple TV store.

Now the video game version of Citizen Vigilante has just gone live on PlayStation, where angry, alienated players need not only imagine themselves as the vigilante hero - they can act out what he does. For some of them, it may be a step toward actually committing the kind of violence that the film and the game glorify.

Over the past month, two catastrophic hurricanes hit the American southeast. In their midst, dangerous rumors circulated suggesting that the rescue workers who were trying to help devastated communities were stealing property and even killing people instead and that meteorologists were part of a government coverup. Preposterous lies, such as that Democrats had created the hurricanes and hurled them at Republican voters to steal the upcoming election, spread easily. Dangerous speech thrives when people are afraid and uncertain about what is actually happening, as was evident during other crises like COVID, Ebola, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

In our final 2024 Election Report, we report specific narratives circulating in the aftermath of hurricanes Helene and Milton.

The attempt to kill former President Donald Trump was awful, and all too familiar in American history. What is far too common right now is dangerous speech - rhetoric that normalizes and even encourages political violence in lieu of democracy. Every American must avoid spreading such language, and we must make a habit of calling it out, especially in our own communities and political groups. That’s more effective than focusing on the other side’s dangerous speech. We can best control ourselves, and our own.

In late February 2020, early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenyan Member of Parliament (MP) Patrick Makau encouraged people to stone Chinese visitors to Kenya who, he claimed, were violating orders to quarantine.

“Every day, some of the internet users who encounter hateful and dangerous speech online choose to respond directly, to refute or undermine it. We call that counterspeech. Many of those who have taken on this volunteer effort go about it alone, while others form groups to coordinate responses and support each other. Some executives of social platforms have touted counterspeech as a method of reducing online hate, but like U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, who famously opined that the remedy for bad speech is good speech, they don’t cite any basis for this assertion. This literature review is an effort to bridge the evidence gap by answering the question: what have scholars learned about the effectiveness of counterspeech?”

Cathy is currently heading our team of research fellows in collecting and analyzing examples of dangerous speech targeting trans people, migrants, poll workers, and local election officials, as well as examples found in campaign ads, related to guns, and referencing the January 6th, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol and subsequent trials.
