In this podcast episode, Derek Bruff talks with author and consultant Leon Furze about the ideas found in some of his recent writing on AI and learning. They discuss resistance as a framework for combatting cognitive offloading, the mental models that educators and students have of working with AI (and how they can lead us astray), and classroom activities that can help students build the kinds of expertise they need to use AI effectively. As higher education leaders navigate shifting enrollment patterns and rising expectations from adult learners, the role of AI in education is quickly moving from experimental to essential. Today’s learners are not only seeking flexibility—they’re looking for guidance on how to navigate and apply AI in their education and careers.

This webinar draws on insights from the 2026 Voice of the Online Learner research to explore how institutions can design online programs that align with evolving demand. We’ll examine how adult learners expect institutions to integrate AI into instruction and career pathways. We’ll also share practical, real-world perspectives on embedding AI into program design, scaling learner-centered flexibility, and leading institutional change in a rapidly advancing landscape. Workforce Pell Final Regulations Released: What Changed from the Proposed Rule
The Department of Education has released the final rule on Workforce Pell Grants and the new Pell Grant exclusion for students whose non-Federal grant and scholarship aid meets or exceeds their cost of attendance. The Department reviewed approximately 440 comments but, in keeping with its stated intent to track the statute closely, kept the overwhelming majority of its proposed language unchanged. Substantive revisions were confined to a few provisions, some noted below which could be notable for the UPCEA community.

One of the most significant changes responds to widespread pushback on the 25 percent ceiling for instruction delivered through written arrangements with ineligible institutions or organizations. Read more. https://ow.ly/NxeP50Z7mgX

As concerns grow over AI-driven grade inflation, Ray Schroeder, Senior Fellow at UPCEA, offers a different perspective. Rather than focusing on limiting the number of top grades, he argues that the goal of higher education should be meaningful learning and well-designed assessment.

Schroeder suggests that if a course has relevant, up-to-date learning outcomes and uses quality grading rubrics to accurately assess student achievement, a higher number of “A” grades should be viewed as a positive outcome—not a problem. In his view, education should prioritize student success and mastery of learning objectives rather than adhering to arbitrary grade distributions. Read more. https://ow.ly/snB350Z6fnN
