At COP30, Parties adopted the Belém Adaptation Indicators, a landmark set of 59 indicators for tracking progress toward the targets of the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) Framework. It's a major milestone.

And yet, gaps in metadata and methodologies, uneven data availability, and wide-ranging capacity constraints mean that translating this into practice still requires significant technical and political effort.

With the upcoming 64th sessions of the Subsidiary Bodies ( ) convening in Bonn, Germany, from June 9–18, C2ES is hosting a webinar to examine what comes next.

This webinar will cover:
- How the Belém Adaptation Indicators came to be
- The technical and political challenges to operationalizing the indicators heading into SB64 and beyond
- What an ambitious SB64 outcome looks like, including the launch of a technical taskforce and the indicators' contribution to the second Global Stocktake

Bringing together experts and negotiators, the webinar aims to build shared understanding and surface actionable priorities ahead of Bonn.

For the Roadmap for Halting and Reversing Deforestation and Forest Degradation by 2030— a target set by the first global stoctake (GST1) and at to save the world’s trees and forests 🌳🌳🌳 —the President should :

1) identify leadership responsible for implementation and tracking progress against the target or convene a global forum or task force to so.

2) consider the Roadmap’s recommendations in relation to GST2, including potential targets and signals on halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation, informed by: an assessment of progress toward the GST1 target; identification of key actors and organizations driving advancement; and evaluation of the remaining work required to achieve that target.

3) consider linking the Roadmap with Axis 2 of the Global Climate Action Agenda (GCAA), which could contribute to enhancing international cooperation and accelerating progress.

Originally established to accelerate climate mitigation in this critical decade, the mitigation work programme has become mired in political division and procedural gridlock, raising questions about its efficacy. With the work programme due to close in 2026 with the option for renewal, it is crucial that Parties avoid losing the only formal agenda item and work programme dedicated to mitigation under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

As countries prepare to discuss the matter in Bonn this June, read C2ES’s submission responding to the call for views on opportunities, best practice, actionable solutions, challenges and barriers relevant to the continuation, functioning and effectiveness of the work programme:

The Presidency Roadmap on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels ( ) should:

(i) identify key international cooperative initiatives in the Global Climate Action Agenda that can support the development of the Roadmap and its implementation beyond COP31;

(ii) use the Just Transition Work Programme’s key messages agreed at COP30 to identify differentiated options for implementation; and (

iii) map systemic barriers and solutions supporting the transition, building on existing global climate action work.

By so doing, the Roadmap will: (i) enable enhanced international cooperation just energy transitions; (ii) help take forward the outcomes of the first global stocktake; and (iii) inform the second global stocktake.

At , Parties adopted a set of 59 indicators to measure progress toward the targets of the Global Goal on Adaptation Framework—the Belém Adaptation Indicators. Parties now have a functional global framework to measure resilience and adaptation ten years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement. This should be celebrated as a major milestone. The indicators are important to measure progress on adaptation for which starts at the end of this year.

However, much work remains in 2026 and beyond regarding their usability at the political and technical level.

America's ability to meet surging energy demand, lower electricity costs, and remain competitive in the global clean energy race depends on its ability to build, and the federal process is not keeping pace.

C2ES recently hosted a media briefing on permitting reform, where Google representative Marsden Hanna walked through the infrastructure challenges standing in the way of energy innovation: aging transmission lines running out of capacity, fragmented electricity grids that can no longer support load growth, and a permitting system that can take over a decade to approve new infrastructure.

The earth produces enough geothermal heat to meet global electricity demand more than 100 times over, but unlocking that potential requires getting the policy right.

Our new Closer Look paper, "Drilling Down: What it Will Take to Harness the Potential of Next-Generation Geothermal," examines how advances in drilling technology—adapted from oil and gas— are making it possible to tap geothermal energy almost anywhere in the world, not just where natural hydrothermal systems exist.

We look at:
→ The technological advances that are driving the promise of widespread geothermal-sourced electricity
→ The scale of opportunity for next-generation geothermal
→ How historic federal support for innovation in the oil and gas industry can provide a roadmap to realize the potential of geothermal energy
→ Actions the U.S. government can take to support the development of next-generation geothermal

launched two one-year initiatives: the Global Implementation Accelerator and the Belém Mission to 1.5. Both will enable and accelerate mitigation and adaptation ambition and implementation, as well as enhance international cooperation.

While the Sharm el-Sheikh Mitigation Ambition and Implementation Work Programme will continue to address mitigation this year, it is up for renewal in November.

This discussion paper suggests that Parties could usefully consider how to maximize the synergies across these workstreams ahead of as well as the longer-term trajectory of mitigation efforts under the Paris Agreement.
