Modern Warrior

Modern Warrior Created by jazz trumpeter Dominick Farinacci & combat veteran Jaymes Poling.

A live story, music and theatre experience featuring stories of resilience, endurance, and how people carry life-changing moments forward, told by those who lived them. Modern Warrior LIVE is a uniquely immersive narrative and music experience that chronicles one veteran’s journey. US Army Veteran Jaymes Poling shares the story of his three deployments in Afghanistan and subsequent transition back

home. Modern Warrior LIVE aims to break down the societal barriers that leave veterans feeling alone. It is a catalyst for meaningful conversation about mental health, post-traumatic growth, and the veteran experience. The production was originally created as a live performance, and the team has done more than 100 shows around the country since its inception in 2017. In addition to resuming live performances post-pandemic, this film serves as a way to reach and impact more communities around the country.

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

We are pleased to introduce a new Modern Warrior production that features FDNY World Trade Center firefighter Bill Spade together with Jaymes Poling (combat veteran who fought in the subsequent war). We will debut the new show in this year of remembrance, and we are thrilled to finally share this with you.

Behind the Lines: a 9/11 Story is a live story, music, and theatre production set against the tragedy of 9/11 and the war that followed. The show features World Trade Center firefighter Bill Spade — the sole survivor of FDNY Rescue Company 5 — and Jaymes Poling, a three-tour Afghanistan combat veteran and the original storyteller behind Modern Warrior. Together, they relive their experiences and find a deep connection shaped by service, resilience, and the weight of what they continue to carry.

From Modern Warrior creators Dominick Farinacci & Jaymes Poling:

Eight years ago we met. Our discussion about misconceptions surrounding veterans, the stigma around mental health, and the need to more widely share these stories sparked an idea we pursued together - a new model of storytelling that brings the individual whose story it is directly to the stage, surrounded by an immersive music and theatre experience.

Since then, we’ve toured our flagship production Modern Warrior LIVE around the country and have built partnerships with leaders in mental health, veteran and first responder communities. Together, we’ve created spaces for meaningful dialogue around how life-changing events shape our lives, our mental wellbeing, and our communities. Our work has expanded to include a wide range of individuals sharing their stories including veterans, first responders, caregivers, individuals rebuilding their lives after incarceration, and more.

Now, 25 years after the September 11 attacks, we begin the next chapter of this work welcoming Bill Spade to our team — bringing his story to stages across the country while also developing a documentary film that will follow the project.

For those of us old enough to remember, we know exactly where we were that day. At the same time, an entire generation has now grown up without a living memory of it.

This production is our continued effort to honor those who gave so much in the face of unimaginable tragedy, remember those who were lost, address how life-changing events impact our mental health, and, in this context, ensure that the stories of that day — and the years that followed — are never forgotten.

It has been incredibly meaningful to work together, and with our director Emmett Murphy who has been with us since the earliest days of Modern Warrior. Welcoming Bill Spade to our team has been deeply inspiring.

We are grateful for the courage of all the storytellers we’ve worked with so far, the dedication of our creative team, and the support of so many along the way, and we look forward to sharing more about Behind the Lines: a 9/11 Story as the production unfolds.

As we wrap up Posttraumatic Stress Awareness Month, we’re reminded that awareness shouldn’t end in June.

Over the years, we’ve heard countless stories that never make the news—stories of people finding their way through the aftermath, discovering new purpose, and leaning on communities that refuse to let them fall through the cracks.

So let’s keep pushing. Keep sharing resources, having the tough talks, and checking in on the people around us. Awareness is just the starting line. Continuing to show up is what truly changes lives.

“More than just a musical or theatrical production, this was an experience of collective empathy and reflection. It created a powerful connection between the storyteller and the audience... and with the broader human experience of conflict, survival, and healing.” - DC Theatre Arts (Rasheeda Amina Campbell)

These three upcoming performances represent a great snapshot of what we set out to do creating Modern Warrior LIVE: Bringing extraordinary artistry and storytelling (told by the individual whose story it is) together to empower a conversation about mental health across communities.

April 25 | Cleveland, Ohio - The Department of Psychiatry has invited us to present MWL for their Grand Rounds session with healthcare providers - a performance and talk about the universal themes of trauma and resilience that our show addresses.

May 4 | Traverse City, MI - Grand Traverse County Veterans Affairs is bringing together all elements of its military service community to host MWL at the beautiful City Opera House, honoring the dedication, sacrifice and resilience of our veterans.

May 10 | Washington, D.C. - Washington Performing Arts, one of the most celebrated and wonderful arts institutions in the country, will present a MWL residency culminating in our May 10 performance at Lisner Auditorium at The George Washington University. Part of our residency will include working with veterans in the area through our EXPERIENCE program, highlighting veteran stories through a performance at the incredible venue Busboys and Poets on May 8.

May is , and we’re so glad to be able to continue to do what we can do in our own way to empower this conversation. We are looking forward to seeing some of you in Cleveland, Traverse City, and Washington, D.C. soon. Visit modernwarriorlive.org for tickets and more info.

Looking back to the beginning of last year, Modern Warrior LIVE brought our full live performance to the historic Bob Hope Patriotic Hall in Los Angeles to recognize the resilience of veterans, first responders and law enforcement. As Los Angeles continues to rebuild after the devastating fires, we want to express our support and gratitude for those brave first responders and law enforcement who confront trauma firsthand and continue to lead beyond the immediate response.

Thanks to Jim Zenner and the Los Angeles County Department of Military & Veterans Affairs. Recognizing the many veterans pursuing careers as first responders and law enforcement, LACMVA specifically partnered with the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and post-show talkback.

With the launch of our EXPERIENCE program, we’ve integrated our unique storytelling model to collaborate with our veteran community to share their personal stories, honoring their courage, sacrifice and resilience. Recognizing the universality of trauma and championing the belief that every individual has the capacity for growth, resilience, and redemption, we have expanded our EXPERIENCE program to include stories of individuals who went through Veterans Treatment Courts, and others with lived experience in the criminal justice system. The powerful testimonials from participants and audience members underscore the urgent need to amplify more voices of trauma and resilience, and to normalize discussions about mental health, to reach people of all walks of life who need to hear that growth is possible.

This Giving Tuesday (a global day dedicated to charitable giving), and through the end of 2024, we invite you to watch these compelling stories and consider contributing to help us amplify even more voices in 2025.

Thank you for your generosity and for standing with us to continue to empower, inform, connect and activate communities across the country.

Sincerely, Dominick Farinacci & Jaymes Poling
