🪖 Honoring History with Distinguished Guests at the World War I Memorial!

We were deeply honored to host a special tour for the Belgian Embassy and their VIP guest, Colonel (GS) Jean-Paul Hames, Chief of the Defence Staff International Relations Division / Military Attaché Network.

Based at Belgian Defence Headquarters in Evere, Brussels, Colonel Hames oversees all Belgian defense attachés stationed at embassies worldwide. As part of his bilateral oversight visits, he inspected the Defense Attaché Office in Washington, D.C., before heading to New York to visit the Permanent Representation of Belgium to the United Nations. We are incredibly grateful that he and the embassy team took the time to share this meaningful experience with us.

🎺 Expanding the Bugle Section!

The day was made even more memorable as we welcomed our newest bugler, Quincy Erickson from the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center! With Quincy joining the ranks, we now have nearly the entire NSO trumpet section bugling for us, ensuring the echo of Taps remains as powerful and moving as ever.

Following the tour and a heartfelt sounding of Taps, our guests posed together to mark the occasion. The Belgian delegation expressed their deep gratitude for the experience, reminding us of the enduring global bonds forged during the Great War.

Today, September 29, is VFW Day, a time to honor the Veterans of Foreign Wars and their unwavering dedication to serving those who served us.

This date holds immense historical weight. On this exact day in 1918, hundreds of thousands of American Doughboys were fighting for their lives in the muddy trenches of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive—the deadliest battle in U.S. military history.

Doughboys faced blistering machine-gun fire, devastating artillery, and a crippling logistical gridlock. Yet, their grit never wavered.

When those WWI heroes finally returned home, their massive influx in the 1920s catalyzed the VFW into the powerful national voice it is today, transforming local posts into essential sanctuaries where wounded veterans found community and healing.

To honor that enduring legacy, today’s Daily Taps at the National WWI Memorial in Washington, DC, specifically honors WWI Veteran 2nd Lt. John R. “Jack” Latchaw (1917-1920). Serving in the 2nd Division Field Artillery, Lt. Latchaw fought bravely in that very Meuse-Argonne Offensive and earned the Silver Star.
