Opal Lee – known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth – spent decades advocating for Juneteenth to be recognized as a federal holiday. Starting at age 89, she began taking symbolic 2.5-mile walks to represent the 2.5 years enslaved people waited before learning of their freedom.

The DMV chapter is partnering with Ward 7 Juneteenth Parade on June 19.

Dr Alisha was officially inducted as a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge — a college founded in 1352. In doing so, she becomes the first Black woman in the history of the college to be inducted as a Fellow.

For those who don’t know, a Fellow is also a trustee of the College’s Governing Body, helping shape the administration, decisions, and future of the institution. In other words…not a small deal
