🚨 Nominations for SPP awards are due March 1! 🚨 Please nominate your colleagues, grad students, or even yourself! The details for the award committees are below.

Have you read (or written) a great book, article or dissertation from 2020 about state politics and policy? Winners will be recognized at APSA this fall, since the State Politics and Policy Conference is not being held this year due to the pandemic. (Hopes are high for a triumphant return to SPPC 2022, to be hosted at Florida State University!)

In 2021, the section will recognize excellence in the study of state politics with the following awards:

We are delighted to announce that the inaugural event of the State Politics & Policy section’s Spring Speaker Series will be held on Zoom on Friday, March 5 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. EST.

Our first event will feature two papers on the theme of policy diffusion.

Alex Garlick of the College of New Jersey will share his research, “Bottom-up Diffusion of Policy Attention in the American Federal System.” Andrew Karch (University of Minnesota) will share discussant comments.

Desmond Wallace of Alfred University will also share his research, “The Diffusion of Representation: How Interdependence Influences Policy Responsiveness in the American States.” Chris Mooney (University of Illinois at Chicago) will serve as the discussant.

The format will be 12-15 minute research presentations, followed by discussant remarks and audience Q&A.

We plan to host several more sessions on alternating Friday afternoons through May featuring other awesome research from junior scholars in state politics & policy. We hope that you will be able to attend! It will be a great opportunity to learn more about interesting research on state politics & policy as well as share your advice and comments with junior scholars in the field.

Without SPPC happening this year or last, we miss getting feedback on research and seeing fellow state politics people. Inspired by the new Junior Americanist Workshop Series (JAWS), we are launching a Zoom workshop series.

We are especially eager to feature junior scholars. Grad students and junior faculty - sign up! More senior people - sign up to be a discussant and/or encourage your grad students to sign up!

Please consider nominating yourself or others for the annual awards given by the State Politics & Policy section. Self-nominations are most welcome, as is forwarding this email to people who you think should be nominating their dissertations or other work. The deadline for nominations is March 1, 2021.

A wonderful message from our fearless leader:

Colleagues:

It is my great pleasure to announce the first class of Tom Carsey Scholars.

As you know, Carsey Scholars are graduate students who are selected based on the merit of their proposed poster/paper for the annual State Politics and Policy Conference. Each scholar will receive $300 to support travel to that SPPC—and the honor of being a Carsey Scholar.

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the SPP section and friends of Tom, the fundraising drive for the endowed fund to support these scholars met its goal of $75,000 in only about one year. This will yield support for 10 Carsey Scholars each year in perpetuity. This is truly a remarkable achievement, one of which we should all be proud. And it is a fitting honor for Tom, whose passion (or at least one of them) was graduate education.

Special thanks to the selection committee this year: Jenny Wolak (chair), Rebecca Kreitzer, and Jason Windett.

Congratulations to the 2019 Class of Tom Carsey Scholars—we’ll see you in Maryland next month!

Her support is a testament to the importance of the section and SPPC’s to the careers of our members, to our collective vision of ensuring that the conference is accessible to graduate students, and to our desire to recognize Tom Carsey. With $4,000 in individual gifts and the $4,000 match, we expect the Carsey Fund to reach our stated funding goal of $75,000 required for us to start drawing from the fund.
