World Press Freedom Day 2011, Washington D.C., DC (2026)

On November 5, The Associated Press will declare winners in a wide multitude of races, from the White House all the way down to state legislatures. But others, including the presidency, may have to wait until additional votes are counted.

Calling races is a role the AP first took on in 1848, amassing an impressive record of accuracy in the years since. It’s a painstaking process that takes months of preparation and hundreds of staffers from across the news organization.

We turned the mic to a recent MPS Journalism grad…

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭?

I’ve always been curious and inquisitive, but it wasn’t until I took a feature writing class in undergrad that it all clicked. I had that ‘aha’ moment like yes, this is what I want to do. The class was a feature writing class on the opioid epidemic and I did my article on drug
treatment court, speaking with everyone involved in it was interesting and moving. I knew I wanted to tell that story and to continue to tell important stories.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

A lot of people are inspiring and we can take inspiration and lessons from them. Passionate people are also inspiring, no matter the passion. But, Alden Wicker (who investigates the fashion industry) and are two journalists that inspire me.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐨𝐬?

Go for it! Try new things, keep writing and stay curious. I also think it helps to be a little self-reflective to use your skills where they’re needed and what suits you (and maybe what skills you need to cultivate). Maybe you’re quiet, but really observant, or maybe you can approach and talk to anyone – all is valuable!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦?

I enjoyed learning from not only the amazing professors, but also my classmates. The program allowed me to try things that I was not sure I would like or would be my forte,
but I really enjoyed and am glad I took those classes and the skills I learned. For example, I’m really glad I took the data reporting class. You also have this incredible opportunity to learn from the best of the best in the industry, who want to help you. It
was also cool to have my capstone–about D.C.’s LED streetlight conversion project–published in Route Fifty!

We turned the mic to a recent MPS Journalism grad….

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭?

I knew I wanted to be a storyteller in 5th grade after I won my first speech competition. Despite being shy, I took a chance by entering the contest, won, and represented my school at the district level. This ignited a fire in me that I have a voice that commands rooms. I performed in the theater because I loved the stage and became the State Champion in Dramatic Performance. I realized that I wanted to use my passion of public speaking and my love of stories to connect with audiences. Broadcast Journalism is the perfect fit.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮?

Everyday people inspire me. A stranger sitting down over coffee to share their story is something I’ll never take for granted. While at Georgetown, I sat down with Virginia Ali, owner of Ben’s Chili Bowl, a historic Washington landmark to hear her story. Despite being a student, Virginia treated me as though I was an employee at the biggest newsroom. I am inspired by those life moments because I’m reminded that there are stories waiting to be heard and written.

Let your passion be the most important thing on your resume. Since 2020, I applied to numerous journalism jobs, but no one called me back. There are so many times I wanted to give up, but my passion and love of journalism kept me going. Today I stand proud with a multimedia journalist job at an NBC affiliate - the offer came before I even graduated. I made it because I never let the spark inside me die, albeit dim for so long. Believe in yourself so that a newsroom doesn’t hesitate to believe in you.
