Congratulations to Samantha Turner-Rosa, one of two 2024 recipients of the Douglas Dockery Thomas Fellowship, which is sponsored by The Garden Club of America

Samantha Turner-Rosa is an educator and studying ecologist from Miami, Florida. She is a recent graduate of the Plant Biology and Conservation Program at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Northwestern University and has begun her PhD at the University of Maryland's Biological Sciences Graduate Program. Her research explores plant migration in response to climate change by conducting fieldwork in salt marsh and mangrove ecosystems in Florida. Although Samantha transitioned from a classroom teacher to a graduate student, her passion for science education and her commitment to connecting underserved students to authentic and engaging science has continued. She is currently developing several programs to make scientific exploration accessible to elementary and middle school students in Chicago and Florida.

Only 2.1 percent of ASLA members identify as African American (compared to 13.4 percent of the U.S. population). Doug Williams, a 2023-2024 LAF Fellow, is trying to do something about this gap by engaging the youth.

He wants to connect with the young people of Chicago—particularly Black K-12 students in marginalized communities—because he sees in these youth the future of landscape architecture and the future stewards of our environment. He believes landscape architecture can help them address their communities' needs in the face of climate and other inequities.
