"The share of families living in affluent neighborhoods doubled, from 7 percent to 15 percent, as did families living in poor neighborhoods, from 8 percent to 18 percent. Some sociologists think the trend is isolating well-to-do Americans from the problems of the poor and the working poor, and impeding upward mobility that has long been part of the American dream."

“Meanwhile, though, the budget autonomy amendment passed by the residents of the District is the law,” Kim Perry, executive director of the pro-statehood group, said in a statement. “It became the law when it cleared congressional review. On that day, it became ‘an Act of Congress.’ Congress also had other opportunities to reject D.C.’s new budget law. And, unless and until it is amended, it not only entitles, but requires, District officials to follow it."

Rather than jumping on the chance to begin implementing the budget autonomy referendum that is law effective Jan. 1, Mayor Vincent Gray maintains that the District needs clarity from Congress on its path toward fiscal freedom.

DC has issued a hypothermia alert for tonight, which means that the 24-hour Hypothermia Hotline will be open. Plug the hotline number into your phone now: 1-800-535-7252

In the event that you see someone on the streets who looks cold, call the hotline. They will send a van by to offer them a bed for the night, and can also provide blankets on the spot.

Make the call. Bring someone in from the cold. You could save someone's life.

"Lawmakers who unveiled the coordinated plan said it would begin to bridge a growing economic gap in the region, which has the nation’s highest median income, at $88,000, even as nearly one in five District residents live at or below the poverty line and the number of poor residents in suburban counties is on the rise."

Lawmakers in D.C. and its Maryland suburbs unite in a plan to raise the hourly minimum to $11.50 by 2016.
