Last month, our team spent a day volunteering with Martha's Table, marking the return of a longstanding Service Day tradition. The experience offered an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, spend time alongside a valued community partner, and reflect on the role relationships play in creating lasting change.

Child care is shaped by a complex ecosystem of regulations, funding streams, and accountability structures. When these different parts don’t work well together, they can create unnecessary complexity for providers, educators, families, and children.

In our latest blog, we share insights from a recent convening of early childhood leaders who are experts in regulation, policy, accreditation, and research. They explored a central question: What would a more coherent regulatory child care ecosystem look like?

The conversation wasn’t about removing safeguards. It was about how government regulation, industry recognition systems, and funding and accountability structures can work together more effectively to support children and families.

The takeaway was clear: protecting children and improving how the system works are not competing goals. Greater coherence can reduce unnecessary complexity while strengthening accountability, access, and children’s experiences.

Last week, we came back together after our summer pause from all-staff meetings, taking a moment to step away from the day-to-day and reconnect as a team.

We kicked things off with a Service Day alongside Martha's Table, where staff volunteered in the organization's food market and helped prepare 1,473 sandwiches and 665 trail mix bags for distribution through McKenna's Wagon. We're grateful to Martha's Table for hosting us and for the opportunity to contribute alongside an organization that shows, every day, the power of community care in action.

At our annual September Summit, we reflected on the year behind us and the one ahead. One message stood out: when we listen better, we do better. Year after year, we've continued to strengthen relationships across sectors, follow the lead of our partners, and create space for bigger ideas and bolder possibilities, and we're excited to keep that work moving forward.

As we begin a new fiscal year, there's exciting work ahead. What won't change is how we show up: grounded in partnership and driven by our commitment to children, families, and the communities we serve.

In 2025, we took a step forward — moving beyond a traditional “do no harm” approach and embracing a more intentional goal: doing the most good for the early childhood field.

That shift led to our Impact Thesis, a clear roadmap for how we invest. It guides what we fund, why it matters, and how we define success — not just financially, but in real impact for children, families, and the people who support them.

What happens when we pull back support for the early childhood workforce?

“The Pay Equity Fund filled an important gap,” says Ma**ca Cox Mitchell, our Chief Program Officer, in a recent WTOP News piece. Without it, experienced educators may leave — and families will feel it first through fewer options, higher costs, and tougher choices about work and care.

The impact won’t stop in D.C. This decision could ripple nationwide, influencing how other states invest in — or step back from — their early childhood systems.
