After 20 years of groundbreaking work, Global Press will wind down its operations at the end of 2025.
We will continue to publish our exceptional journalism through December. After that, our training programs, style guide and other products will be freely available to journalists everywhere.
Founded in 2006, Global Press was truly an idea before its time. By training and employing hundreds of local women journalists, we have shown that foreign correspondence can evolve so that every region of the world is covered with dignity and precision.
Our extraordinary editorial team produced thousands of original stories that expanded access to accurate information, shaped public discourse and influenced policy. In Zimbabwe, we documented the fragile economy, exposing currency confusion and the resilience of small traders. In Mexico, our reporters traced the transformation of abortion from a crime to a recognized human right. In Mongolia, our investigation into virginity testing in schools led to a nationwide ban. In Nepal, our reporting on labor migration prompted multiple government responses and new policies granting greater rights and benefits to returning migrants and their children. Recently, our cross-border coverage of shifting democracies highlighted the urgent need to defend civic freedoms. And these are just a few examples.
Perhaps most importantly, our stories delivered life-changing information to audiences that mainstream media too often ignores. Publishing in 10 languages and partnering with more than 500 media and community partners, we intentionally prioritized audiences that we knew could not be monetized. Every day for the last 20 years, we have lived our values and produced one-of-a-kind journalism that we are truly proud of. Our work was recognized dozens of times with awards for journalistic and workplace excellence, leadership and impact.
Along the way, we pioneered new tools to help transform the future of journalism too. Our Duty of Care program redefined safety and support for women journalists. Our Style Guide wrote new rules for how to refer to people and places with dignity and precision. Our legacy initiative will ensure that these tools can be used by others to advance a more informed and inclusive world.
While closing this chapter is difficult, we recognize that now is the right time. Sustainable philanthropic support has become increasingly out of reach and the landscape around us has shifted in ways that make it impossible to sustain the level of quality and integrity we’ve upheld for two decades. By stepping back now, we can honor the integrity with which this organization was built and prioritize taking care of our team.
To everyone who has believed in our mission to create a more informed and inclusive world, keep believing that such a world is possible. Thank you for your trust and support — you made 20 years of world-changing journalism possible. For that, we will be forever grateful.
