Breadcoin

Breadcoin Breadcoins are food tokens, used to provide the dignity of food choice for anyone in need at local food vendors Breadcoin is a community response to hunger.

Members (monthly donors) fund coins that go to neighborhood teams for distribution to the hungry through those in relationship to them. A recipient of Breadcoins can use them to purchase food at participating locations. And with the tokens in hand, a vendor can exchange them back into cash or use them to make payments on a Breadcoin microloan. This past Saturday we held our King’s Table event in Washington DC during Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend! Volunteers distributed Breadcoins and sat at tables with neighbors who enjoyed a meal as a community. We are super grateful to have The Marion Barry Avenue Market and Cafe, a new cafe located in Ward 8, as a partner in our Breadcoin network!

Because of your support, Breadcoin grew again this year - reaching more neighborhoods, partnering with more local vendors, and initiating more welcoming tables than ever before.

And every number tells a human story. Behind each stat is someone who got to choose their own meal, a small business kept thriving, and a neighbor reminded they matter.

As we head into 2026, the need keeps growing. If you’re able, please consider a year-end gift to keep this work moving: https://breadcoin.org/donate

Thank you for believing in dignity, choice, and community. You make this possible!

“It’s not just handing someone a dollar… it’s giving them the dignity of choosing their own meal.”

Breadcoin turns that idea into something real. A simple token that lets someone choose their own food, be welcomed by a local vendor, and feel part of the community. Sometimes that small moment of choice means more than we realize.

Breadcoin exists to make sure everyone has a real seat at the table, through food, dignity, and human connection.

This season, you can be part of that moment and keep Breadcoins in circulation: https://breadcoin.org/donate

Thanksgiving is a time to gather around the table. But for many in our own neighborhoods, that table feels out of reach.

Breadcoin helps people enjoy a hot meal at a local restaurant with dignity and without barriers. When other options fall short, we make sure everyone has a place at the table.

As we step into this season of gratitude, help us set more places at the table. Give the gift of a good meal this Thanksgiving!

What Breadcoin is About

Breadcoin is a community response to those who are hungry. Join the network of people, food providers and community groups working to be sure everyone is fed.

Neighborhoods work together to get Breadcoins (food tokens that work like cash at participating vendors) into the hands of those who need them. This happens through generous Breadcoin members who give monthly to provide the coins.

Vendors accept them just like cash, and a Breadcoin team member cashes them out monthly, providing a vendor with new customers, the knowledge that he or she is feeding more of the community, and a critical role in a system that is insuring all have food security and choice and are treated with dignity. Vendors can also apply for micro loans to grow their businesses.

We are an all volunteer team led daily by Scott Borger, Cary Umhau, William Spence and others.
