Breadcoins are food tokens, used to provide the dignity of food choice for anyone in need at local food vendors Breadcoin is a community response to hunger.

Members (monthly donors) fund coins that go to neighborhood teams for distribution to the hungry through those in relationship to them. A recipient of Breadcoins can use them to purchase food at participating locations. And with the tokens in hand, a vendor can exchange them back into cash or use them to make payments on a Breadcoin microloan. 😍 Four weeks later, and we're still smiling about this night.

Looking through the photos from our 10th anniversary celebration, we're reminded just how many people have become part of Breadcoin's story over the years.

Seeing so many of them together in one room was something special. We knew we had a lot of people cheering us on. But seeing that support fill a room? That was something else.

We're incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us, and to all the donors, partners, vendors, volunteers, and friends who have helped Breadcoin grow over the past decade.

One new Breadcoin vendor would be good. Jennifer Meltzer gave us three. She owns All Set Restaurant & Bar, Fryer's Roadside Chicken and Money Muscle BBQ in Silver Spring, MD, and all three are now accepting Breadcoin.

Her support actually started before that. Earlier this year, All Set hosted an evening benefiting Breadcoin. Bringing her restaurants into the network felt like a natural next step.

🎓 William recently joined Dr. Tenyo Pearl’s students at Coppin State University to talk about community organizations and the role they can play in their neighborhoods.

But the conversation didn’t end in the classroom. The students later joined us for a Shared Table at The Mill on North, hosted with Leah, our Executive Director in Maryland.

We need young people in this work! ❓💡 Their ideas, their questions, and their perspectives. Giving students a chance to see community work up close and imagine their own role in it matters.

🍽️ There was always room for one more at the table.

For Chef Stephen Colston, food has always meant bringing people together. Growing up in a family of seven, he watched his mother make sure there was always enough food — not just for their family, but for foster children as well. His father was a mentor and coach who welcomed neighborhood kids into their home, often around a meal.

That spirit stayed with Stephen and eventually became Flavor 76 Catering, where he serves up the flavors of New Orleans. Think slow-cooked brisket, Schmackin’ Cheese, seafood gumbo and Po Boys.

And now, Flavor 76 accepts Breadcoin.

🔟 years of Breadcoin called for a party. And you all made it a good one.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us, and especially to the incredible Breadcoin vendors who made the night taste as good as it looked: J & J Mex-Taqueria, Open Crumb, Dionne's Good Food (Instagram: ), Casa Mia Italian Eatery (Instagram: ), _donnafayes, Paradise Garden (Instagram: ), Peach Cobbler Factory- DC, D&B Deli (Instagram: ) and Kbird Bar (Instagram: ). And ._ for giving us a soundtrack worthy of the occasion.

🫶 It was pretty special to see a room full of people who have been part of our story. Thank you for getting us to 10.

💪 Now, back to work. We’re just getting started!

One of the things that makes Columbia Heights special is the diversity of people who call it home. At our recent Flash Table, they came together over a shared meal.

Together with New Song Community Church and Los Hermanos, we served 175 meals. But the volunteers didn’t just serve, they sat down and shared the meal with their neighbors. It was wonderful to see people with different backgrounds and experiences come together around the same tables.

Thank you to New Song DC, Pastor Jonathan Gray, Los Hermanos Dominican Restaurant, and the 25 volunteers who made it happen.

Glizzys Vegan Food Company was started by Northwest DC natives Dontrell Britton and Nathan Headspeth. They put a plant-based spin on a DC favorite, serving vegan hot dogs and halfsmokes in a place that feels like home.

But what they’re building goes beyond the food. Their own experiences growing up shaped their commitment to creating opportunities for young people. Through the Glizzys Crew Youth Program, they hire and mentor youth and give them a chance to build their own path forward.

🎂 Her birthday. Her meal. Her choice.
Maya picked pizza for her birthday. It was her day, and she got to choose.

Breadcoin turns 10 this year, and we’d like to celebrate by giving 100 kids the chance to pick their own birthday meal, too.
