Last week, our Young Kings in Monarch Mentoring enjoyed a victory! And while the views were suite, it wasn’t the best part of the night.
It was the culture.
The culture of trust, respect, and joy, amongst our mentors and mentees. Watching our Young Kings laugh, build, and connect reminded me of something I believe deeply:
- Adults can set expectations.
- Adults can create structures.
- Adults can name values.
But students drive culture.
When our young people feel seen, supported, and connected (not just by adults, but fellow peers and community members), they shape the tone of schools, communities, and the world.
That’s what Monarch Mentoring is about. Our mentors don’t just help mentees transition into high school. They provide:
Guidance
Accountability
Joy, love, and connection
Access to networks and opportunity
Mediation and restoration when conflict arises
Consistent presence
As a result, our students influence school culture in powerful ways. They model leadership. They shift peer dynamics. They protect their school’s climate. They commit to each other’s well-being, experience, and development.
This weekend at Crowning Our Kings, I’ll be diving deeper into this idea:
- How do we move from controlling student behavior to cultivating student influence?
- How do we share power in ways that elevate our Black boys as culture-shapers?
- How do we build ecosystems where mentoring isn’t extra, it’s essential?
The suite was fun. But the real win is watching young people learn how to lead their own environments. I look forward to connecting with fellow educators, school leaders, and youth development practitioners at this Saturday’s Black Male Educator Capitol Summit!
