Urban Nation H.I.P.-H.O.P. Choir (Hope, Integrity, Power – Helping Our People)
Founded by Dr. Sheila Johnson Newman & Dr. Rickey Payton, Sr. in D.C.

Choir (Hope, Integrity, Power – Helping Our People) is more than a choir, it’s a movement. Founded in Washington, DC by Dr. Sheila Johnson Newman and renowned musician Dr. Rickey Payton, Sr., the choir provides students ages 13–18 with a safe, structured, and creative space to explore their talents, discover their voices, and grow into leaders. Through dynamic performances and workshops, students

gain confidence, discipline, and a deeper appreciation for their cultural heritage. Our choir performs a wide variety of music from gospel and jazz to inspirational, folk, classical, and contemporary; instilling both excellence and joy in every student. Each participant is expected to maintain strong academics (2.5 GPA or higher) while engaging in motivational workshops, seminars, and community service projects that build character, responsibility, and pride. Urban Nation has been featured on national stages and media outlets, with highlights including performances at the White House, Disney World, and the National Christmas Tree Lighting, as well as collaborations with legends such as Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Celine Dion, Yolanda Adams, and Maya Angelou. At our core, we believe in helping young people channel their creative energy into something powerful. Equipping them with life skills that go far beyond music.

Dear Family, Friends, and Urban Nation Community,

I’m Dr. Rickey Payton, Sr., President & CEO of Urban Nation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization in the District of Columbia.

I come to you with a heavy heart and a humble request.

We recently lost a dear friend and father of an Urban Nation member to an untimely death. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we are not sharing the name publicly at this time.

This tragic has left the family not only grieving, but facing the sudden financial burden of funeral and homegoing expenses. As a community, we are coming together to be a blessing and assist the family during this difficult time.

Our Goal: $10,000
Funds will go directly to:
