Update from the St. Patrick's Parade Committee:
Friends of the St. Patrick’s Parade of Washington, D.C,
First, thank you all for your years of support! The St. Patrick’s Parade of Washington, D.C. would not exist without your involvement, whether at our fundraisers throughout the year, or along the Parade route every March. Organizing such an event takes teams of active volunteers and partners in the community, and we’re very grateful you’re one of them.
As we look to the future of the St. Patrick’s Parade of Washington, D.C., we would be remiss to not reflect upon our founding. The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Washington, D.C. was held in 1971, organized by members of the Irish American Club, who traveled along Massachusetts Avenue, from Dupont Circle to the statue of Robert Emmet. In 1974, the Constitution Avenue route was established. The march became a full-scale Parade with Marching Bands, Pipe Bands, our Nation’s Military, Police, Fire Departments, Schools, and Scout Troops. This annual affair grew to what became known as “The Nation’s St. Patrick’s Parade.” In 2022 we decided to return to an annual march, gathering near the National Mall with the Capital as our backdrop.
From that first step onto Massachusetts Avenue to our now-annual marches near the National Mall, the St. Patrick’s Parade and the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee have been continually evolving. This brings us to our exciting news– The St. Patrick’s Parade Committee (is going back to its roots and) will now operate under the umbrella of the Irish American Club! The Board of the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee is excited about this new chapter for the Parade Committee and our new home within the Irish American Club.
