Y.I.M.A.E. (Youth In Media and Education) The Y.I.M.A.E. Program Overview

The Y.I.M.A.E. In accordance with the Positive Reinforcement reform agenda, the Y.I.M.A.E.

program is a youth based driven organization that will provide a multifaceted media and education curriculum that will incorporate incentives and measurable outcome-based components as a non-traditional means for rehabilitation. program has been designed to validate the premise that exposing troubled community youth to a program model that merges entertainment media with education can indeed posit

ively change the behavior and future outlook of these youth. During the program, the youth will refine technical competencies and grasp lifelong principles that inspire educational advancement and workforce preparation. The overall goal is to help youth develop the knowledge and skills they needed to thrive in the modern world—skills such as global awareness, civic engagement, technology literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving and life skills. program shall focus on its objectives to promote successful working class young adults, independent living, reunite youths with their families, and integrate them back into the community at large. Using behavioral modification components, risk assessments, pre-assessments, daily progress notes (including community involvement/relation skills), post assessments, and statistical data, the Y.I.M.A.E. program aims to produce measurable outcomes to meet these objectives. The program will incorporate weeks of intensive hands-on mentoring and training in academics, vocational and life skills, television broadcasting and media, internet and satellite radio, music production and recording, and entrepreneurship and mentoring. The vocational and life skills aspect of the program will focus on assessing youths’ strengths and needs to prepare them for high school graduation, college, internships, and ultimately ensuring integration into the workforce. The television broadcasting and media aspect of the program will engage youth in writing and producing short and long films, news programs, music videos, and camera/control room operation. The Internet and satellite radio aspect of the program will provide the youths an opportunity to manage and operate a radio program; a forum for topics that matter within their communities; and an outlet for empowerment, peer relations, and reduction of recidivism within their perspective communities. The music production and recording aspect of the program will give youths the opportunity to explore their creativity through songwriting and composition, educate youths about mixing and mastering, and ultimately create confident and innovative artists. Finally, the entrepreneurship and mentoring aspect will focus on business management and ownership to build the foundation for youths to become successful entrepreneurs and understanding the process of team building and public relations. The program will be divided into departments, each of which will focus on a different aspect of the program and will be arranged in a classroom setting. All classrooms will have two instructors for every five (5) students to provide an intimate, hands-on, comfortably paced learning experience that will yield successful measurable outcomes. The measurable outcomes will be based on a point system (behavioral modification program) that tracks student progress and identifies performance trends that may trigger intervention and increased mentoring. This intervention will use positive reinforcement to prevent regression and revocation of privileges. The effectiveness and outcomes of the Y.I.M.A.E. pilot program will be evaluated and measured using a data management and tracking system.

Music Production and Recording Department:

The Y.I.M.A.E. Music Production and Recording program incorporates an agile style of learning in which youths are constantly analyzing their products and performances, self-critiquing, revisiting, and refining. This learning style not only promotes artist growth and teaches youths how to accept constructive criticism, but it teaches self-awareness which is key to empowering youths to develop and hone their skills independently. This iterative learning process consisting of eight (8) major topic areas—Music Production and Recording Concepts; Incorporating Marketing into Music Production; Composition, Arrangement, and Songwriting; Recording, Mixing, and Mastering; Protecting Your Investments; The Business Side of Music; and Live Performances.

The Music Production and Recording Concepts module provides an introduction to basic composition, songwriting, and recording concepts to prepare them for the creative process and the technical rigor that accompanies studio performance. Incorporating Marketing into Music Production prepares helps youths identify their goals for the songs they will develop which feeds into the creative process. The Composition, Arrangement, and Songwriting module allows the youths to explore their creative sides as they create music, write positive lyrics, and start learning how to navigate the studio equipment to properly arrange their songs. The Recording, Mixing, and Mastering module takes their basic studio knowledge to the next level by teaching them how to work the mixing boards, proper studio etiquette, basic techniques for mixing and fine-tuning sounds, and how mastering creates a final product. Once the youths’ songs are complete, the Protecting Your Investments module teaches the youths how to protect their hard work through copyrights and performing rights organizations, and teaches them about knowing their entitlements which feed into deal negotiations. The Business Side of Music teaches the youths about distributions, promotions, marketing, and how to negotiate deals to ensure that they are fairly compensated for their works. Finally, the Live Performances module teaches youths about stage presence and live performance techniques to prepare them for performing their works in front of live audiences and on camera.
