Memorial Day is a chance for us to pause as a community and recognize the extraordinary individuals whose bravery and commitment shaped the freedoms and rights we treasure today.

Honoring them is about choosing, every day, to stand up for the same values they believed were worth the ultimate sacrifice: fairness, justice, and dignity for all.

NextGen Graduates,

9 years ago the NextGen Program was launched with a small delegation attending L500. Since 2017, hundreds of you participated in what I believe was one of the most important and impactful leadership programs in our nation, and definitely in the Association’s history. How would we have known that just a few years later that many of our hard fought gains in education, health equity, housing, criminal justice, DEI and voting rights would be eroded. We were preparing you for a battle that was already difficult and a situation that was already dire, prior to 2016 and 2025. I said then, and repeat now, “I’m encouraged by being exposed to the nation’s brightest Black (and other) activists who we need for a time such as this.” You ARE the right person, for the right time, as most are overwhelmed, disillusioned, disgusted and waiting for the tide to turn or the storm to subside. TVs are off and many are becoming weathered to this craziness. You always run in! You keep the faith! You prepare for the fight! I (we), want to express our appreciation for each and every one of you! Please take care of you, stay encouraged and let’s get ready to not just get back to the status quo, but to truly win!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our own on April 27, CJ Pulluaim.

A proud member of the 2019 NAACP NextGen Leadership Program, he remained an active force within the NextGen Alumni Leadership Council and the NAACP Kansas City, Missouri community. His commitment to service left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He will be remembered for his vibrant personality, his dedication to the work, and the light he brought into every space.

We honor his legacy and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those he inspired. 🕊️

This weekend was a powerful reminder of what happens when we bring leaders together—across backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives—to learn, challenge ideas, and move forward with intention.

Connecting leaders is just the beginning.
