Georgian Association in the USA

🇬🇪👇🏻It was a pleasure today to host the Georgian Orthodox church delegation headed by Bishop Saba together with DC St. Tamar Georgian Orthodox Church parish priest დეკანოზი პავლე ზაქარაია at the library of Congress to see the unique Georgian collection cared for by Area Specialist Khatchig Mouradian. Georgian Association's mission core pillar is strengthening cultural ties between the two countries and there is no better example than having a rich Georgian collection at the nation's and world's largest library which we can all access and enjoy.

He arrived in Peoria, Illinois, at 16, speaking little English. He learned the language partly by watching John Wayne movies. Decades later, in October of 1993, he became the highest-ranking officer in the United States military. 🇬🇪🇺🇸

General John Shalikashvili, born in Warsaw to an émigré Georgian officer, was drafted into the U.S. Army as a private. He rose through the ranks to become Supreme Allied Commander Europe and, in 1993, the 13th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the first immigrant and the first draftee ever to hold the post.

Our summer intern Ari Peters, a history student at the University of Edinburgh has brought his remarkable journey to life in a new interactive StoryMap, based on the biography "Boy on the Bridge." Follow "Shali" from war-torn Warsaw to the Pentagon 👇

Thank you, Ari, for this wonderful project!

Awesome to see our community member, Megi Tedoradze featuring a Georgian resource at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign! What Georgian resources are at your universities? Share with us in comments!

Welcome to the first Monday Source Spotlight of October! We hope you are enjoying the beginnings of fall.

This week, Megi Tedoradze is featuring "Karthuli Tsigni = Gruzinskaia Kniga: Bibliografiia." WorldCat Record: https://uiuclib.on.worldcat.org/oclc/417484762.

"This is the third volume of kartuli tsigni (Georgian Book), which contains a bibliography of books published in the Soviet Republic of Georgia from 1946 to 1950. It features titles from various disciplines, including history, philosophy, finance, engineering, culture, sports, trade, arts, literary studies, agriculture, and more! I especially like the list of poetry and short-story anthologies featured here."

What sources are you using this October?
