A piece this special deserves prime real estate in our shop window.

This late 19th-century hand-painted chest features the six-masted S.S. Wyoming, a workhorse of the East Coast coal trade in the early 1900s.

Georgetown itself began as a bustling port town, with ships carrying goods along the Potomac long before Wisconsin Avenue became known for shopping.

Painted with ports of call from around the world, this remarkable piece feels right at home just a few blocks from the waterfront. ⚓️

When John Shaw retired, he had time on his hands. Now, he has tarnish. 🍴🪙🥄

A longtime silver collector, former diplomat, and dedicated Op Shop DC volunteer, John serves as our Silver Polisher and Assessor, helping identify, evaluate, and care for the remarkable pieces that pass through the shop.

In this interview, John shares a bit about American coin silver—its history, craftsmanship, and what collectors look for when evaluating these fascinating early American pieces.

We’re grateful for the expertise, curiosity, and stories John brings to the Op Shop. 🪙

Swipe through for Jocelyne’s curated painting picks. 🖼️

Highlights include “Giverny Waterlilies” (1/12) by Paul Hennesy, former president of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters, and “Quiet Roar” (12/12) by Catherine Yi-yu Cho Woo, whose poem “Tian Tian Tian Lan” later became a chart-topping song in Taiwan and remains a Mandopop classic.

That’s the beauty of secondhand art: every piece brings a little history, character, and conversation into your home.

Every week, our team is sourcing exceptional consignments and donations, photographing new arrivals, researching provenance, and filling both the shop and our online store with one-of-a-kind finds.

Right now, two pieces have us especially excited:

⚓ The S.S. Wyoming Chest: a late 19th-century hand-painted captain's chest celebrating the six-masted schooner Wyoming, the longest wooden ship ever built. Constructed in Bath, Maine in 1909, the vessel stretched nearly 450 feet from boom to boom and carried coal along the East Coast before being lost in a storm off Cape Cod in 1924. A remarkable piece of maritime history.

🐎 An 18th-Century Equestrian Leather-Clad Trunk: richly detailed and full of character, this rare painted trunk sits atop a later stand and brings together centuries of craftsmanship, travel, and equestrian tradition.
