Zion Church was one of the sites the Foundation visited on our bus tour of the Battles that Saved Washington in 2024. Among the graves in the adjoining graveyard are two Virginian Confederate cavalry officers, one killed at the Battle of Monocacy and the other in a skirmish following it in Urbana. Zion was also used as a hospital during the Civil War. This is your chance to visit the church and graveyard with bonus of a speaker event.

“Lift the Cap” legislation signed into law! Congratulations to the MD Heritage Areas Program.

We're excited to announce that yesterday Gov. Wes Moore signed legislation into law that lifts the statutory funding cap for Maryland's Heritage Areas Program from $6 million to $12 million. This bipartisan legislation, which was unanimously passed in the Senate, strengthens Maryland’s position as a tourism leader by removing outdated constraints to the program's growth.

“Maryland’s heritage areas, with a focus on place-based experiences, offer a powerful lens through which people may view the past and engage with history as it unfolds today. This year, the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area celebrates 20 years as a certified heritage area, and the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority reaches the 30 year mark,” said Elizabeth Scott Shatto, Executive Director of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. “Today, thanks to bi-partisan leadership of our champions in the Senate and House of Delegates, and Governor Moore’s decision to sign this bill, the program’s impact will expand as it serves communities across the state.”

Thank you to everyone who has championed the "Lift the Cap" bill and supported the Heritage Areas program!

Join us in our newest fundraising campaign for the Augmented Reality (AR) Blockhouse Project. The project is a collaboration between the MNBF and Monocacy National Battlefield that will focus on the Civil War-era blockhouses once located at the Monocacy Junction on the old B&O RR Mainline. The blockhouses served several purposes that we will explore in our interpretation and storytelling through AR.

Thanks for the recognition.

Congratulations to the Monocacy National Battlefield on the rededication of the new museum on April 3, 2026. It was a success by any measure in attendance, festivity, networking, and the breaking of bread between old and new friends and colleagues.

Mile Marker 43 of the Baltimore & Frederick town Turnpike Road located about a half mile from the Jug Bridge.

On the morning of July 9, 1864, Confederates moving out of Frederick along the Baltimore Pike would have encountered Col. Allison L. Brown of the 149th Ohio National Guard on the west side of the Monocacy River with a skirmish line close to Mile Marker 43.
