📺 From ignorance to compassion. From stigma to understanding.

Leisha Mckinley-Beach sat down with the incredible Jasmine Guy & Debbie Allen to revisit one of A Different World’s most impactful storylines addressing HIV stigma.

In the Season 4 episode “If I Should Die Before I Wake,” which premiered April 11, 1991, Tisha Campbell portrayed Josie Webb, a college student who disclosed that she was living with HIV. Her revelation exposed the fear, misinformation, and stigma surrounding HIV during that era. Whitley Gilbert, played by Jasmine Guy, was among those whose reactions reflected the misconceptions and anxieties of the time.

But this conversation isn’t just about looking back. It’s about recognizing how far we’ve come, acknowledging the stigma that persists, and understanding our responsibility to move from ignorance to compassion through education and accurate information.

❤️ People living with HIV deserve empathy, dignity, and respect—not judgment. The more we educate ourselves, the better equipped we are to replace fear with facts and stigma with understanding.

The goal is simple: Less stigma. More compassion. Better information.

Wait… is this me? 👀

Substance use doesn’t always look like what we expect. You don’t have to hit rock bottom, use every day, or experience a major crisis for it to be worth talking about.

Maybe you’ve noticed you’re using more than you planned. Maybe you’re using to cope with stress. Maybe you’ve tried to cut back but keep going back. Or maybe you just feel like something has changed.

Whatever your situation, you don’t have to figure it out alone. 💜

The team at Us Helping Us is here to listen, support you, and help you take the next step—without judgment.

What does HIV prevention mean to you? 🖤

At USCHA, we invited people to step up to the mic and finish the sentence:

💭 HIV prevention should feel…
🖤 The Black community deserves…
✊🏾 Ending HIV starts with…

The answers reminded us that prevention is about more than a medication or a message. It’s about desire, choice, dignity, pleasure, access, and the power to define what health looks like for our communities.

This is the conversation behind PDiBA — PrEP Desirability in Black America.

Because when we listen to the community, we learn not just what people want from HIV prevention, but how they want it to feel.

What started as a powerful conversation at NMAC USCHA between Debbie Allen and Jasmine Guy became a beautiful reminder of just how much A Different World meant — and still means — to so many of us.

Reflecting on the groundbreaking HIV storyline featuring Tisha Campbell, the discussion took me back to the power of television to educate, challenge stigma, and bring important conversations about HIV into homes and communities that needed them most.

Representation matters. Storytelling matters. And the work we do today is connected to the trailblazers who used their voices and their platforms to make a difference yesterday.

And then… the conversation ended with a little Hillman College praise break. 🙌🏾💜

Five days later… and we’re STILL talking about it. 🖤✨

For the Culture: Black People’s Party was more than a night out—it was a moment to pause, exhale, reconnect, and celebrate the people behind the work.

The work of ending the HIV epidemic isn’t easy. It takes commitment, resilience, collaboration, and community. So in Anaheim, we made space to put the work down for a moment and simply celebrate US.

From the music and energy to the connections, laughter, looks, and unforgettable moments—this was Black joy in full color.

A huge thank you to everyone who showed up, showed love, and helped make the night possible—including our incredible sponsors and partners: Gilead HIV US NMAC My Brother's Keeper, Inc. Equity Impact Solutions, San Francisco AIDS Foundation TruEvolution Inc. prepdiba POCAAN Heart To Hand, Inc. APInc

The work continues. The movement continues.

Until next time, Anaheim… ✨
