When Jill was diagnosed with cancer, doctors gave her 6-12 months to live. They told her the best they could do was keep her alive until a new treatment came along.

Luckily, something did come along: a clinical trial.

Jill lived near the cancer center hosting the trial, her spouse was able to keep working while caring for her, and she had the financial resources she needed. “Having these resources and the opportunity to participate in that clinical trial means I am here today.”

Jill got the treatment she needed, and she’s still here nine years later. But not every cancer patient lives close to a clinical trial or has the money to cover the travel, lodging, childcare, and other costs needed to participate. For some patients, the hope a clinical trial can offer is simply out of reach.

That’s why we need Congress to pass the Clinical Trial Modernization Act, which would help lower the costs that often accompany participating in a clinical trial.

“When a patient, like me, is facing a terminal illness and there are no available treatments, offer hope for a future.”

For 19 years, Angie Sylling has been a powerful voice in the fight against cancer. A former Iowa ACT Lead and staff member in both Minnesota and Iowa, her dedication to advocacy has never wavered.

After losing her mom to cancer, Angie carries her mom's final words with her every day: "Keep stomping." ❤️

And that's exactly what she's doing—advocating for her mom and everyone impacted by cancer.

Thank you, Angie, for your leadership, passion, and commitment to creating change. Inspired by Angie's story? You can make a difference, too.

Join our advocacy team today and help us keep stomping toward a world without cancer: https://www.fightcancer.org/get-involved-acs-can-iowa.

This year marks the 16th anniversary of Lights of Hope, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN’s powerful tribute to those impacted by cancer. Thousands of illuminated bags will line the National Mall, each one honoring a loved one and sending a message to lawmakers: we won't stop fighting.

From August 13-16, we’re participating in the $100 in 100 Challenge to raise funds for cancer advocacy and honor the lives of those impacted by cancer. As part of Iowa’s 99 County Challenge, we're working to engage advocates and supporters from across all 99 counties to show that every community has a role in the fight against cancer.

Every donation helps ACS CAN push for policies that improve care, support families, and save lives. Help us achieve this challenge! To donate, use this link: https://acscan.donordrive.com/participants/ACSCANIOWA2026
