What happens when passionate volunteers come together to make a difference?

Powerful advocacy, meaningful remembrance, and hope for the future.

Today, volunteers from across Iowa gathered for our Iowa Volunteer Training to sharpen their advocacy skills, connect with fellow cancer advocates, and prepare for the important work ahead.

In the afternoon, advocates gathered at the Iowa State Capitol for our Lights of Hope Ceremony and Display.

Together, we honored cancer survivors, remembered loved ones lost, and stood with those facing cancer today. Each luminaria represented a personal story and served as a powerful reminder of why we advocate every day for better prevention, detection, treatment, and access to care.

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their story, decorated a luminaria, and continues fighting for a future free from the burden of cancer.

📣 Iowa's young people deserve to know where their leaders stand on the fight against cancer.

Across Iowa, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN volunteers, survivors, caregivers, and advocates like Vivaan Dudeja have been asking federal candidates to sign the Cancer Promise and publicly commit to policies that prevent cancer, improve access to care, and support lifesaving research.

To date, we are still awaiting responses from Joe Mitchell (IA-02) and Chris McGowan (IA-04).

Cancer impacts far too many Iowa families, and today's youth will inherit the decisions made by tomorrow's elected leaders. Signing the Cancer Promise is a simple but meaningful way for candidates to show they are committed to making cancer a priority.

📢 Volunteer Spotlight: Micaela 📢

Meet one of our newest advocates, who turned a breast cancer diagnosis into a powerful opportunity to make a difference.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Micaela experienced firsthand the challenges, emotions, and uncertainties that come with a cancer journey. Determined to help create a better future for others facing cancer, she joined American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN's program this summer and quickly became an engaged voice for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers across Iowa.

We're so grateful for her willingness to turn her experience into action and for the passion she brings to our advocacy efforts. Her journey reminds us that every voice matters and that survivors play a vital role in shaping a future with better outcomes for everyone affected by cancer.

A longtime American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network - ACS CAN leader and the immediate past Chair of the ACS CAN Board of Directors, Dr. Deming has dedicated decades to advancing policies that improve the lives of cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. His commitment to advocacy has earned him numerous honors, including ACS CAN's Volunteer Award for Excellence in Advocacy and the American Cancer Society's prestigious St. George National Award.

As a nationally recognized oncologist, founder of Above + Beyond Cancer, and Medical Director of MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, Dr. Deming continues to use his voice to champion increased access to care, lifesaving cancer research, and patient-centered policies.
