Devoted to the Development and Application of Statistical and Mathematical Theory and Methods in the Biosciences.

The Society welcomes as members statisticians, mathematicians, biological scientists, and others devoted to interdisciplinary efforts in advancing the collection and interpretation of information in the biosciences. The Society publishes two journals, Biometrics, reporting communications consistent with the Society's mission, and, jointly with the American Statistical Association, the Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics.

Today, the International Biometric Society proudly joins the global community in recognizing the International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science (IDWSDS)! 🌎

Observed on October 6, IDWSDS brings together statisticians and data scientists from around the world while celebrating and elevating the contributions of women across the profession.

IBS is proud to recognize the many women throughout our global community whose research, leadership, mentorship, and service continue to advance the biosciences.

That spirit was on display earlier this year at IBC2026 in Seoul, where the "Women in Biostatistics Special Session" celebrated the achievements and impact of women in the field. Organized by Gabriela Cendoya of the IBS Argentinian Region and Sarah Ratcliffe of the Eastern North American Region (ENAR), the session brought together Guadalupe Gómez Melis, Maria Valeria Paccapelo, and Misrak Gezmu, PhD, for a conversation focused on leadership, mentorship, and emerging directions in biostatistics.

On , we join to celebrate all the women of IBS whose expertise, perspectives, and contributions strengthen our international community and help shape the future of our field.

During our "IBC Memories" series, we have been sharing the sights and the sounds of Seoul. Today, we're sharing some of the insights gleaned from the post-conference survey. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and opinions. Here are a few insights from our polling:

- Nearly 80% of our attendees considered themselves academics, and a significant percentage of our attendees specialized in survival analysis, longitudinal data analysis, and epidemiology. That said, more than 40 other specialties were represented as well!
- Many attendees commented on the high-quality and diverse scientific program, with strong invited sessions, short courses, and keynote presentations. They also valued the exposure to new research areas, methodological advances, and interdisciplinary perspectives.
- Feedback to the survey shows IBC was an excellent platform for professional development, particularly for students and early-career researchers. It's clear our participants found the conference rewarding, inspiring, and beneficial for building future collaborations and advancing their research.

Today, our memories of IBC2026 in Seoul turn to a very special session, the "Bioethics Roundtable – Responding to Uncertainty in Times of Global Change." This engaging discussion focused on how the scientific community can respond more proactively and visibly to urgent global challenges such as pandemics, climate change, and artificial intelligence. We also enjoyed a flavorful Korean-style lunch during this session!

Many thanks to Alex John London, Cailin O'Connor, Zhenyu Zhang, and Jim Weatherall for their insightful commentary during this panel, as well as IBC Organizing President Iris Pigeot and International Program Committee Chair Frank Bretz for making the arrangements!

As we begin thinking about IBC2028 in Basel, Switzerland, we're considering the kinds of innovative programming we might bring to this next event to make it truly unique, just as IBC2026 in Seoul was.

By Wednesday of IBC2026, conference attendees were reconnecting with old colleagues and friends, conversing with leaders and IBS members, and exchanging notes with fellow attendees about the research presented in the 160 scientific sessions.

During this week's "IBC Memories" post, we're celebrating all the personal relationships forged during the conference. The International Biometric Conference goes beyond traditional educational programming, offering special city tours and social events that encourage attendees to explore Seoul, learn about Korean history and culture, and embrace their "inner emperors." We continue our "IBC Memories" series today, focusing on Day 2 of IBC2026.

On Tuesday of the International Biometric Conference, we celebrated our major awardees, including Raul Macchiavelli, PhD, Dean and Director of the College of Agricultural Sciences at the Universidad de Puerto Rico Recinto de Mayaguez, who was named an Honorary Life Member of IBS in recognition of his 40+ year-long career, exemplifying the IBS values and mission.

We also recognized the 2026 recipients of the Rob Kempton Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Development of Biometry in the Developing World:

• Tobias Chirwa, Head of the School of Public Health of the Wits - University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa

• Xiaohua (Andrew) Zhou, Chair and Professor of Biostatistics at Peking University in China

• Ziv Shkedy, Professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Universiteit Hasselt in Belgium

And, of course, we can't forget our very own Outgoing President Iris Pigeot, who was recognized for her exceptional leadership. Congratulations to all!
