APABA-DC congratulates Amir H. Ali on being confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as a district judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Mr. Ali will be the first Arab American and first Muslim district judge on the Court.

Mr. Ali recently served as President and Executive Director of the MacArthur Justice Center, Co-Director of the Criminal Justice Appellate Clinic at Harvard Law School, and an Adjunct Professor at UDC David A. Clarke School of Law. He was lead counsel on dozens of federal court cases, from the district court to the U.S. Supreme Court, and will bring an important perspective to the district court given his extensive civil rights background. After maintaining an active criminal pro bono docket while in private practice, he achieved groundbreaking victories, persuading the Supreme Court to expand the constitutional right to counsel and recognize the right to sue government officials who pursue false charges against an innocent person.

APABA-DC is proud to have endorsed Mr. Ali’s candidacy. He previously clerked for the Supreme Court of Canada and the Honorable Raymond C. Fisher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with distinction, and Harvard Law School, magna cm laude.

Please join us in congratulating Mr. Ali!

APABA-DC warmly congratulates Danny Lam Nguyen on being confirmed by the U.S. Senate earlier this week to serve as the first Vietnamese-American associate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia!

Mr. Nguyen is currently Associate General Counsel at Booz Allen Hamilton. He has litigated a wide range of civil and criminal matters as a former trial attorney in the Market Integrity and Major Frauds Unit of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Superior Court Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, and a former Counsel at WilmerHale. Mr. Nguyen also previously clerked for Judge Reggie Walton on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from UCLA, and Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center.

APABA-DC is proud to have endorsed Mr. Nguyen’s candidacy. As a child of Vietnamese refugees to the United States and his family’s first attorney in the United States, Mr. Nguyen brings a unique perspective on the American justice system that is informed by his experiences. Mr. Nguyen has been active member of the AAPI legal community, including APABA-DC, and was a founding member of the Vietnamese American Bar Association of the Greater Washington, DC Area, Inc. (VABA-DC).

Please join us in congratulating Mr. Nguyen!

Join APABA-DC and APABA-MD on June 23 at 8 pm for a night at the Arena Stage for the play, Exclusion. Tickets for members of APABA-DC and APABA-MD are comped at $40 per attendee. Please register and bring cash or check to the event.

The Page Act of 1875 was the first of many Chinese Exclusion acts passed by the United States government, marking the end of open borders. The Page Act specifically barred Chinese women from entering the United States. Seven years after that, the Chinese Restriction Act, which is now known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, was signed into law, prohibiting the entry of all Chinese people into the United States. Kenneth Lin’s Exclusion explores these issues through a brave world of comedy, debate, and artistry.

Set in present-day Hollywood, the land of storytelling, Exclusion puts a magnifying glass on the personalities and power structures that create the larger than life worlds we see on small and big screens. Each of Lin’s characters fight for control over which narrative gets told, whether it be on the screen for the world to hear, or in how each of their own stories play out in reality. Through the act of dramatizing history, audiences and communities are invited into the conversation beyond the role of a silent listener. They are asked to invest in the characters of a story beyond the lines of a textbook, and see them as active participants in the lives they might lead today.

Please join us for a virtual fireside chat with award-winning author Steph Cha, as she shares her experiences and the critical role storytelling plays in raising collective awareness of history, heritage, and the human connections instrumental to binding relationships and communities together.
Cha is the author of Your House Will Pay, a winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the California Book Award, as well as one of the Los Angeles Times’ 110 essential Los Angeles books, which is set against the backdrop of the 1992 Los Angeles unrest. The LA uprising was sparked in part by the acquittal of white police officers who were responsible for the beating of a Black man, Rodney King, as well as the shooting of a Black girl, Latasha Harlins, by a Korean store owner in South Central LA. Fueled by years of racial and economic inequality in the city, the subsequent unrest spread from South Central LA to Koreatown and other areas. Existing resentment and fear between newly immigrated Koreans and Black residents of South Central LA was especially enflamed by cultural differences and a lack of awareness and understanding of the intense civil rights struggles and history of police brutality in Los Angeles’ Black communities. Memories of the 1992 riots and the corresponding issues continue to influence our society today.
Cha is also the author of Follow Her Home, Beware Beware, Dead Soon Enough, and Treasures in Heaven. Her work has made appearances in the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Review of Books. She also served as noir editor and is the current series editor of the Best American Mystery & Suspense anthology.
Cha was born in San Fernando Valley, CA and is a graduate of Stanford University and Yale Law School.
