🔍 How can impact evaluations support the design, delivery, and scale-up of school meal programs?

Impact evaluations help governments understand what works, for whom, and under what conditions by comparing different procurement and delivery models while school meal programs are under way.

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), with IFPRI and the World Bank, hosted an impact evaluation workshop in Nairobi to strengthen the evidence base for social protection systems. During the workshop, representatives from Burundi, Chad, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda and Zambia presented their current school meal programs, proposed future impact evaluation designs and explored funding priorities.

Despite national and international commitments to food systems transformation and an increasing adoption of common indicators, no comprehensive targets have been established against which progress can be measured.

This recent study by Carducci et al., with co-authors including IFPRI’s Hazel Malapit, Quinn Marshall, Danielle Resnick, and Keith Wiebe, examines current and historical progress towards international commitments to food systems transformation. The study shows that current progress is insufficient to meet 2030 targets and benchmarks, but that achieving most targets and benchmarks by 2050 is possible with considerable investment and intervention.

🆕 Sudan’s conflict at three years: Evidence for recovery, resilience, and rebuilding

Three years into the outbreak of violent conflict in Sudan, the crisis has become far more than a humanitarian emergency. Evidence presented at the Third Sudan Conflict Conference showcased how the war has disrupted agriculture, markets, livelihoods, public services, and institutions, while forcing households and businesses to adapt under extreme pressure.

The conference highlighted a central message: Sudan’s recovery will require coordinated strategies that link humanitarian assistance with longer-term resilience and development.
