Global food commodity markets are entering a new phase in which traditional indicators may no longer provide a clear view of market dynamics. While supply conditions for key crops appear quite promising, a closer look reveals a more complex picture—shaped by climate risks, macroeconomic pressures, and shifting market behavior.

On June 23, join IFPRI and Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) for a virtual policy seminar on “Weather, Money, and Shifting Bets: What’s Driving Food Commodity Markets?”

🗨️ Speakers include John Baffes (World Bank Group), Brian Barker (University of Maryland & AMIS), Kona Haque (ED&F), Seth Meyer (Mizzou), Mads Frank Markussen (CM Navigator), Joseph Glauber (IFPRI), and Monika Tothova (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) & AMIS).

Tomorrow is . Displacement and conflict affect not only livelihoods, but also mental well-being of vulnerable populations.

New evidence from shows that combining cash assistance with group-based psychological support can help conflict-affected populations recover from the economic and emotional impacts of crisis. As humanitarian needs continue to grow worldwide, integrated approaches that address both financial security and mental health can strengthen resilience among refugees, internally displaced people, and host communities alike.

Research like this highlights the importance of investing in interventions that support and safeguard people’s well-being and ability to rebuild their lives with dignity.

The economic impacts from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue to reverberate, raising concerns across developing countries facing spiking global fuel and fertilizer prices.

IFPRI's James Thurlow and Eleanor Jones discuss new economywide modeling that shows that high prices could increase global food insecurity and push more than 20 million into poverty across 20 developing countries.

: A robust spectral-temporal index for cross-regional mapping of plastic-mulched farmland using decametric-resolution images.

In this study, researchers proposed the Plastic-mulched Farmland climbing and flatting Signal Index (PMFSI), a cost-effective and robust index to improve cross-regional PMF identification. The PMFSI is constructed based on two consistently observed and distinctive spectral-temporal signals of PMF and requires only limited cropland samples to extract key crop phenological transitions.

To evaluate its effectiveness and compare it with other approaches, PMFSI was applied to three ecologically diverse PMF cultivation regions in China. Overall, the study found that the PMFSI provides an accurate, transferable, and scalable solution for large-scale plastic-mulched farmland mapping without reliance on ground PMF samples, supporting sustainable farming practices and ecological protection efforts.

🆕 : Two steps forward, one step back? Champions and roadblocks for Mexico’s General Law on Adequate and Sustainable Food.

Mexico's General Law provides a practical legislative framework to guide Article 4 of Mexico’s constitution, which states that people have the right to nutritious, sufficient, and quality food, and is an important milestone in an ongoing struggle to guarantee the right food. Yet the General Law remains largely unimplemented more than two years after its passage.

💧 Small-scale irrigation technologies do require investment, but the cost of the technology is often not the primary constraint nor are subsidies necessarily the only solution to reaching poorer farmers. Other barriers show up as or even more strongly across multiple countries and studies.

A recent blog by Claudia Ringler (IFPRI) and Nicole Lefore (Water for Food) argues that scaling small-scale irrigation equitably requires looking beyond the price tag and finding ways to improve farmers’ access to government support, while also strengthening the enabling environment of irrigation.

Global debates on food systems transformation and nutrition-sensitive agriculture are increasingly interested in the conditions under which diversifying smallholder production leads to better diets and how this varies across market contexts.

This study examines how the association between farm production diversity and women's dietary diversity varies with remoteness in rural Nepal's contrasting geographies.

🆕 : Country-level analysis: Iran War increasing global poverty and food insecurity.

The economic impacts flowing from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue to reverberate, raising concerns across developing countries facing spiking global fuel and fertilizer prices. New economywide modeling conducted by IFPRI shows that high prices could increase global food insecurity and push more than 20 million into poverty across 20 developing countries.
